What are lifestyle credit cards?

A lifestyle credit card is just like an ordinary credit card, but with enhanced lifestyle benefits. These benefits can be wide-ranging, including substantial discounts on hotel nights, resorts and dining out. Lifestyle credit cards could include access to airport lounges, lower airfares on partner airlines and specially packaged travel deals.

Golfers also stand to win with a lifestyle credit card, including complimentary green fees and free access to elite golf programmes at top golf resorts. A lifestyle card usually provides access to events which are exclusive to cardholders, while you can expect to receive higher reward points or cashback when you spend on luxury goods and travel.

How do lifestyle cards work?

Lifestyle credit cards offer a unique combination of benefits. These benefits will be a mix of increased rewards on your spending and special perks and discounts. In addition, issuers of leading lifestyle credit cards will advise you on top lifestyle choices, including recommendations covering the world’s best hotels and travel destinations.

Expect specifically negotiated packages and deals that are exclusive to lifestyle cardholders. Credit card companies offer these extended benefits to entice you to spend more on your credit card, which earns your credit card provider more commission on transactions. Some lifestyle benefits are financed through annual credit card fees, which can be steep.

Features of lifestyle credit cards

  • Exclusive offers. You will get first-rate, exclusive offers with your lifestyle credit card. Examples include a spa benefit when you stay at a resort, or free drinks when you book dinner at a participating restaurant.
  • Additional rewards. Lifestyle credit cards frequently pay a higher cashback rate on your leisure and travel spend, or more rewards points. This means you get a higher percentage back when you pay at selected categories of merchants.
  • Inside information. Top cards provide curated content on the best travel destinations, top hotels and best places to dine out. These newsletters and magazines are usually exclusive to lifestyle credit card holders.
  • Special status. Many lifestyle cards offer complimentary tier status with hotel groups, golf clubs and car rental agencies. This can lead to perks such as car upgrades and special treats on checking in at your hotel.

How to compare lifestyle cards

  • Your lifestyle. The benefits offered by lifestyle cards vary widely. Consider the different cards on the market and choose the card which features benefits and perks that match your lifestyle.
  • Annual fees. Though some lifestyle cards charge no annual fees or a very low annual fee you may find benefits are trimmed accordingly. Consider the value of the benefits on offer along with the annual fee as a high annual fee may be worth paying if you can really use the lifestyle benefits.
  • Interest rates. Lifestyle credit cards can charge high rates on balances so think carefully about the annual percentage rate (APR) on a lifestyle credit card if you regularly carry a balance.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Automatic benefits. A lot of the lifestyle benefits don’t require any actions from you, so you could enjoy increased rewards and special offers which are applied to your account as you pay. It is an easy way to save.
  • Exclusivity. The best lifestyle card providers go to lengths to negotiate exclusive events and special moments for their cardholders. You simply won’t get access to these exclusive events if you don’t hold a lifestyle credit card.
  • Annual fee waiver. Lifestyle cards targeted at very high spenders often feature permanent annual fee waivers, as long as you maintain the level of income or investment which entitles you to a premium banking service.

Cons

  • Benefit changes. It’s not uncommon for a popular benefit to be withdrawn without notice. You may find yourself committing to a high annual fee only to see the benefit you value most has been withdrawn at short notice, perhaps of just a month or two.
  • Annual fees. Unless you qualify for a fee waiver you could find that the annual fee charged to your account erases the real value of the lifestyle benefits.
  • Perks lack value. Carefully consider the benefits and perks on offer, as these can be presented as very valuable when, in practice, you don’t stand to save much money. Always make sure the dollar value of the benefits package outweighs any annual fee, or the benefits you sacrifice by not choosing a different card.

What to look out for

Always consider the real monetary value of the benefits that a lifestyle card offers. Never pay more in annual fees than the real value of the benefits you will receive. Though lifestyle benefits can appear attractive when added up, it’s the actual value you get throughout the year that’s important.

Keep in mind that lifestyle credit cards tend to charge higher interest rates. If you carry a balance on your credit card you should try to pay as little interest as possible which may require a different credit card. Don’t prioritise any lifestyle benefits a card may have over a low interest rate on a credit card.
