What are credit cards with free luggage?

To attract new credit card signups, banks and providers may throw in attractive welcome gifts such as cash vouchers, air miles, rewards points and more. One of the most common complimentary extra for new credit card sign-ups is a free luggage bag.

However, as dazzling a freebie may be, you should always consider the card’s benefits and not just the welcome offers. Ask yourself:

  • Does the credit card match your spending habit?
  • Does it reward you for the things that you already spend on?
  • Also, are you aware of the minimum amount (if any) you need to charge to the card before being eligible to claim the gift?

In addition to paying attention to the card’s terms and conditions, make sure you compare your options when it comes to cashback, rewards points or any other incentives that you could get when you compare credit card options.

How to compare credit cards with free luggage

Comparing credit cards will help you find one to suit your needs. Here are the main factors to consider before applying for a credit card:

  • Consider the card’s features, not just the welcome offer. Ask yourself if the credit card will suit your needs after the welcome offer period ends.
  • Look at the features of the card. Check out the standard interest rates and fees, as well as the perks or waivers offered by the card.
  • Consider your individual financial situation. This includes your financial commitments, your income from work and your ongoing expenses. You should also consider your spending habits to decide whether you will be able to effectively manage a credit card.
  • Why do you want a credit card? Do you need the credit facility to help with upfront payments or access extra funds for your upcoming vacation? Think about the reasons you want a credit card and determine if you really need one can help you narrow down the various options.
  • Are you planning to apply for other unsecured credit facilities in the near future? Your credit history is a major determining factor for approval when you apply for any form of credit, including cards, personal loans, car loans and mortgages. Getting a credit card and making timely bill payments can help you build up a good credit history.
  • Can you afford to pay off the credit card bills in full every month? You’ll rack up interest charges for any outstanding balance from your credit card bills, so ask yourself if you’ll be able to pay off your card in full before it rolls over to the next month. If there’s a chance where you may not be able to pay off the debt in full, you may want to reconsider applying for a credit card to avoid getting trap in a debt cycle.

How to apply for a credit card (and claim your welcome bonus)

If you’ve compared your options and decided on a card that is right for you, make sure you confirm that you meet the provider’s eligibility requirements and organise the necessary information before you apply.

Eligibility requirements

  • Age. You need to be at least 21 years old in order to apply for a credit card.
  • Residency status. Some cards are only open to application from Singaporeans citizens and PRs, while others are open to foreigners.
  • Income. The minimum annual income requirement to apply for a credit card generally starts at S$30,000 but varies from card to card.
  • Credit history. You’ll need to have a good credit history in order to be approved for a credit card.

Documents and information you’ll need to provide

If you meet these application criteria, you can go ahead to fill out the online form. You’ll need to provide some personal details, including:

  • Personal information. This includes your full name, NRIC number, date of birth, residential address, email address and phone number.
  • Income documents. The required income documents vary according to your employment status, but you’ll typically need to submit your latest original computerised payslip, bank statements, Income Tax Notice of Assessment or last 12 months CPF statement.

How can I claim my free luggage?

Successful applicants who met all the eligibility criteria for the welcome offer are typically notified by the bank or provider through the mail. You can expect to receive a redemption letter with instructions on how you can collect your welcome gift.

Generally, you’re required to bring along the original redemption letter, your credit card and NRIC/passport when during collection. You also need to collect the gift in person or by an authorised representative. Take note that your welcome bonus may be forfeited if it is not collected within a period of time (normally stated on the redemption letter).
