Sompo is a subsidiary of SOMPO HOLDINGS in Japan. The insurer has offered affordable insurance to individuals and companies in Singapore since 1989. While Sompo may not be one of the biggest names in car insurance here, the company remains competitive by offering a suite of comprehensive car insurance options.

What policies are available?

ExcelDrive Prestige

Sompo’s most comprehensive plan offers the highest level of protection for a range of eventualities. These include loss or damage to your vehicle caused by accidents, fire, theft and natural disasters. It also offers protection if you cause damage to other people and property. It’ll also let you choose your own workshop for repairs or maintenance. Get an excess waiver of up to S$1,000. Plus, get up to S$100 per day for up to 10 days if you aren’t able to use your vehicle after loss or damage.

ExcelDrive Gold

This mid-range plan also includes loss or damage to your vehicle caused by accidents, fire, theft and natural disasters. It also offers protection if you cause damage to other people and property. Get an excess waiver of up to S$1,000. You can also get up to S$100 per day for up to 10 days after loss of use.

ExcelDrive Focus

Sompo’s most basic comprehensive plan comes with cover against loss or damage to your vehicle caused by accidents, fire, theft and natural disasters. It also offers protection if you cause damage to other people and property. Plus, protection if you cause damage to other people and property.

What won’t be covered?

There’s no cover available for a claim made under your Sompo Car Insurance policy if:

  • Your car was being driven by an unlicensed driver, or someone whom the insurer has declined to cover
  • Your car was being driven by someone who was under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Your vehicle was carrying more people, or a larger load than the legal limit
  • Your car was being driven while in an unsafe or un-roadworthy condition
  • Your car was being used to carry passengers for business purposes
  • Your car is being used for purposes of racing
  • Your vehicle was subjected to a deliberate, intentional, malicious or criminal act by you, anyone person driving your car, or anyone else acting with your consent
  • It is for any loss of use of your vehicle
  • It results from the lawful seizure of your vehicle
  • It is for loss or damage that occurs after an accident, theft or breakdown unless you have taken reasonable steps to protect your vehicle

What excess will I be charged?

Your excess is the amount you have to pay towards a claim you make on your policy. The excess can vary depending on the car you drive, your age and the policy you choose. There’s some flexibility on your excess with Sompo, as you can adjust your level of standard excess. If you decide to ‘buy up’ you will pay less for your premium. However, in the event of a policy claim you will need to pay more for each claim.

If you choose either the ExcelDrive Prestige or the ExcelDrive Gold plan, you can get an excess waiver of up to S$1,000 waiver on the first accident repair in the policy year. Be aware that this provider charges an additional excess of up to S$3,000 if your car’s damaged or lost after being driven by a young and/or inexperienced driver, or an elderly driver. Sompo currently qualifies a young driver as being under 25, while elderly drivers are at least 70 years of age.

How to sign up?

To sign up for a car insurance policy with Sompo, you’ll need to start by making sure you’re eligible for a policy. You have to:

  • Have a minimum of two years’ driving experience in Singapore.
  • Have made no more than one claim on your car insurance in the past three years.
  • Have made total claims not exceeding more than S$30,000 for the past three year
  • Your vehicle age must be below 15 years.

Making a Claim

If you need to file a claim on your Sompo Car Insurance policy, you can do so online at any time. You’ll need to have your policy number with you when making a claim, as well as details of the accident. You must report any accident within 24 hours, or by the next working day.

If you’re on a comprehensive plan with this provider, you can call their Mobile Accident Response Service (MARS) on 6333 2222. This service is available 24/7 and covers any accident within Singapore. Sompo will send a representative to the scene of the incident, and they will help you to process your claim.
