Crucially, it’s also backwards compatible with most PlayStation 4 software, which means the majority of your old games will work on the new system.

Is the PlayStation 5 available in Singapore?

In May 2021, we learned that there will still be a short supply until the end of 2022. A number of factors are responsible for the delays, including issues with supply chains due to the ongoing pandemic.

In January 2022, Sony stated that it was going to produce more PS4 consoles to make up for the PS5 shortage, even though production was originally planned to cease in late 2021.

As of February 2022, we are aware that retailers like Noel Leeming, The Warehouse, Mighty Ape and JB Hi-Fi have had a small supply available, but these have been snapped up in a matter of minutes.

So how do you get your hands on one?

We can’t find any firm information on when the next big PlayStation 5 shipment will be available in Singapore. As there have been small amounts of consoles sold through Singaporean retailers over the past few months, it pays to be on to it with checking different websites and signing up for newsletters and notifications that might let you know when stock is available.

You may have some luck on online marketplaces like Lazada, Shopee, Amazon or Facebook Marketplace. However, we’ve seen hugely inflated prices on these sites since the PS5 release date. Unless you are really desperate to get one, save your hard-earned dollars and wait until you can get your hands on one at the normal retail price.

With huge demand for Sony’s newest gaming console, we suggest you try to make a pre-order whenever you see that this option is available with Singaporean retailers.

The alternative is to pick up a PS4 console to enjoy for 2022 and then hopefully the PS5 console will be more readily available in Singapore by 2023. Many of Sony’s biggest exclusives will still be available for the PS4, so you won’t completely lose out.

Can I pre-order the PlayStation 5?

It’s possible to secure a PS5 by placing a pre-order. Online shopping retailers such as Lazada and Shopee have retailers selling the PS5 console with good reviews, though prices are higher than the suggested retail price.

With some stores selling the PS5 console in recent weeks, we’d recommend getting on the email list and registering your interest so you can be notified when stock is available.

Which version should you buy?

Sony has launched 2 different versions of the PlayStation 5: the standard model and an all-digital option that lacks an optical disc drive. The latter version retails for less but you won’t be able to play physical games or Blu-ray/DVD movies. Instead, all media needs to be streamed or downloaded through an Internet connection. (Sony hasn’t revealed how this will affect backwards compatibility with PS4 games. Hopefully, some form of proof-of-purchase will be utilised so that you can download and play your old games.)

With the exception of the disc slot, both versions are identical beneath the hood. If you rarely use physical media, then the all-digital version might be worth considering to save some money. However, if you like watching Blu-ray movies and don’t want to clutter your home entertainment unit with extra hardware, go for the standard edition.
