Best cashback credit cards 2020

Maximise your rebates by choosing the right cashback credit card for you.

Last updated:

There are several types of cashback available including bonus one-off cashback payments, tiered rewards, category-based cashback and flat percentage cashback. When choosing a cashback card, you need to consider your spending habits and lifestyle as well as card fees, interest rates and other card features.

If you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for, we’ll walk you through the steps to make the right choice to meet your needs and get the most value out of your cashback credit card.

How we chose the best cashback cards

We’ve chosen the cards on this page based on the providers available through Finder. These cards are not representative of the entire market. To narrow down our top picks, we considered the cashback offer on everyday spend as well as additional cashback for specific eligible purchases. We’ve also considered whether or not the card has minimum spend requirements or cashback caps.

No single cashback card will be the best choice for everyone, so compare your options before picking your new card.

How do cashback cards work?

Cashback credit cards offer perhaps the most straightforward type of incentive programme, where a percentage of your expenditure is paid back to you in the form of a monetary rebate. This rebate will then be credited to your account and automatically offset your next monthly statement. Cashback credit cards can be an easy, hassle-free alternative to points and miles rewards. There are several types of cashback including basic, tiered and bonus cashback.

Also known as “flat rate cashback”, cardholders can earn cash rebates at a single cashback rate with every purchase, regardless of category. With such simple cashback cards, there’s no need for you to track and activate bonus categories. The earn rate for these basic cashback credit cards are typically the lowest (around 0.25%) but may be suited for those whose spending habits are evenly distributed throughout multiple categories.
Tiered-cashback credit cards offer different or elevated cashback rates for different categories. For example, a tiered-cashback card may offer 3% cashback on online spend and 2% on dining, and 1% cashback on all other purchases. The cashback you earn from online purchases and dining are considered elevated rewards. So if you shop online and dine out often, a tiered-cashback card might be suited for you.
A rotating bonus category cashback credit card is one that can help you get the largest haul of rewards, though it’ll take a bit of effort. These credit cards typically require you to meet a minimum spent on certain spending categories (eg. online purchases or telco bills) or with the bank’s partner merchants (eg. Grab, Starbucks or NTUC FairPrice) for three consecutive months (or every quarter).

If you’re able to max out the revolving spending categories each quarter, you may earn up to 10% in cash rebates from those spends. To reap the highest amount of rebates with these cashback cards, you’ll need to keep an eye on your card’s cashback calendar.

What about introductory offers?

Introductory cashback promotions are those cards that come with a higher cashback rate for the first few months, or maybe a bonus rebate when you make your first purchase. Before signing up for these type of cashback cards, understand the limited nature of these promotions and check if there’ll be any cashback rewarded for subsequent spendings.

How to choose the best cashback credit card

Cashback credit cards are generally considered entry-level cards for everyday use, as long as you understand what you’re signing up for. Before applying, remember to read all the terms and conditions of the card you’re interested in and compare it against other similar cards.

Consider the following factors:

  • Type of reward. Cashback rewards are usually awards on specific categories including dining, shopping, petrol and transport.
  • Your spending habits. Some cards require you to meet additional requirements before you can earn the cash rebates, so make sure to pick one that is aligned to your actual spending habits to get the most out of it. For example, if you spend a lot on dining or online shopping, look for a card that offers elevated cashback rates on these categories or merchants. Avoid signing up for a card that offers bonus cashback on categories you hardly spend on. If your spendings are somewhat evenly spread out throughout the various categories, consider a card with a high base cashback rate.
  • Introductory promotions. Many cashback cards offer a special introductory promotion. However, make sure you understand the terms and conditions and expiration date before signing up. While an introductory bonus can help you earn additional cashback, look for a card with cashback that still offers what you need once the promotion period has ended.
  • Fees and interest rates. If the card has an annual fee you can weigh the annual fee against the amount of cashback you expect to earn in the first year. Ideally, the amount of cashback you get should be worth more than the annual fee. Also, consider the card’s purchase rate and any additional charges or fees to help you decide if the card suits all your needs.

What else should I know about cashback cards?

All credit cards come with their own unique set of terms and conditions, so it’s highly advisable to read all the fine print before committing. While the criteria to activate cashback rewards may differ from card to card, these are some of the common additional requirements you may need to fulfil:

  • Cashback caps. Credit card issuers tend to impose a cap on how much cash rebates you can earn per month. Some may be consolidated cap (eg. maximum S$50 cashback per month across all category spends) and some caps are split by categories (eg. maximum S$50 per month for online purchases, S$100 per month for groceries and petrol etc). So before applying for the card, always read the fine prints to check if there are any cashback caps. If there are, do the maths and figure out how much you can spend on the card before hitting the cap.
  • Minimum spend. A lot of cashback credit cards will require you to spend a certain amount before you’re eligible to earn the advertised cashback rates. Minimum monthly spend typically ranges from reasonable amounts such as S$500 to hefty sums like S$2,000. So if your typical expenditure falls short of that stated minimum, you should consider applying for another card with a more attainable qualifying spend amount.
  • Cashback categories. Most cashback credit cards offer bonus cashback categories or merchants, so it’s important to apply for one that reflects your lifestyle and spending habits. It makes little sense to get a card that provides 5% rebates for online shopping if you hardly buy anything online. Also, if you tend to do your groceries at Sheng Siong supermarket, then make sure you’re not getting a credit card offering cash rebates at NTUC Fairprice.
To make the most out of your credit card, make sure to consider the costs of the card and any specific conditions you need to meet to be eligible for cashback benefits. It’s also important to compare a range of cashback credit cards before you apply so that you can find the one that will really work for you.
