Expert review

The Sears Credit Card is a Sears store card from Citibank and the easiest to obtain version of Citi’s line of Sears cards. It requires no annual fee, comes with a variable APR of 25.24%, and a deferred interest offer for 12 months on select Sears purchases online.

The Sears Credit Card notably earns no rewards, unlike the Shop Your Way Mastercard®. The card is also closed-loop, meaning you can only use it for purchases at Sears or Kmart. This puts it on the lower rung of the ladder when it comes to store credit cards and effectively renders the card only good for the occasional deferred interest offer on Sears or Kmart purchases. Of course, deferred interest is vastly inferior to a standard 0% APR period, as failure to pay off your product in time means you’ll get hit with a big interest charge from the day you purchased the item.

The card offers occasional coupons and advanced notice of sales events, but this is hardly enough to make the card passable. If you want additional value on your Sears purchases, you’re better off looking for a flat-rate cashback card.

How to apply for the Sears Credit Card

You can apply for a Sears Credit Card at the Sears website by doing the following.

  1. Go to Sears.com.
  2. At the top menu bar, highlight Credit card and click on Apply now from the drop down menu.
  3. Under Sears Card, click on Apply & use today.
  4. Fill out your requested information and click Submit.

Sears Credit Card benefits

  • No annual fee. You won’t pay an annual fee to use this card.
  • 12-month financing option. Select purchases allow for a 0% 12-month deferred interest APR period. Unfortunately, it isn’t clear what purchases are eligible for this financing option.
  • Monthly coupons. Sears will send you unique coupons for the store each month.
  • Sales notices. Sears will alert cardholders of upcoming sales events ahead of their launch.

Sears Credit Card drawbacks

  • Financing bonus is deferred interest. While a deferred interest plan can prove useful, it’s more punishing than a traditional 0% intro APR. Missing a monthly payment or failing to pay off the item you purchased will result in a charge of the entire period’s worth of interest.
  • No rewards. You won’t earn any rewards for your purchases with this card, which is quite weak for a store card.
  • Closed loop. You can only use this card at Sears or Kmart.

Sears Credit Card customer reviews and complaints

The Sears Credit Card largely receives negative reviews from consumers, with many citing unnecessary late fees and poor customer service. The Sears Card is offered through Citibank, which is not accredited with the Better Business Bureau and receives an F rating from the organization as of June 2021. Citi currently has a 1.9 customer rating through Trustpilot as of June 2021, with customer complaints focusing on poor customer service.

Bottom line

There isn’t much to write home about with the Sears Credit Card – there are simply better options available no matter your financial goal. If you’re looking for rewards, consider picking up a traditional cashback card, or if you need to build credit, a secured card will likely serve you better.
