Halo 5: Guardians is the biggest release on the Xbox One yet. In its near two years of existence, perhaps there are games that are longer, larger and have greater sales potential, but as Microsoft’s flagship franchise, it’s the genuine system seller that needs to do well. That one game that may persuade fans to make the leap into the current generation of consoles.
But Halo 5: Guardians has been divisive since the off; the removal of splitscreen offline in favour of 60fps appeared to split fans down the middle, and while the playing experience is buttery smooth without a doubt, reviews have reacted poorly to the overall challenge and narrative of the game and pointed to a need to play with three friends on the hardest difficulty to get the most out of the campaign. On the multiplayer front, the new Warzone has been a hit and, for many reviews, strong enough to see them ignore the campaign’s weaknesses.
Ultimately it is down to personal preference; but as an amalgamation of multiple viewpoints, services like Metacritic can give us a general idea of where each Halo game ranks amongst its peers. The interesting thing to note is the gradual decline of the series over time in the minds or critics, and while an average score of 86 would be welcomed by many, the sad truth is it will be considered a failure by, if not Microsoft internally, definitely investors.
So here is a look at the top 10 as per Metacritic, and our top 10 here at Finder.
