A QBE renters policy might be a good option if your landlord has a deal in place and you can buy it through them, or if you already have your auto insurance with QBE. Otherwise, it might be difficult to find a local agent and you can’t apply online.

To find other options for renters policies, including ones that allow online quoting compare renters insurance options.

What renters insurance coverage does QBE offer?

QBE offers a standard, no-frills renters insurance policy in all states except Florida and Alaska. Here’s what’s covered:

  • Personal contents. Covers your personal belongings, no matter where they’re located.
  • Replacement cost. This add-on will provide the full cost to replace your items with something similar, without taking depreciation into account.
  • Personal liability. Provides defense costs if somebody sues you for a covered reason, such as someone getting hurt on your property.
  • Personal injury. This coverage pays for defense costs if you get sued for libel or slander due to hurting someone else’s reputation.
  • Personal security. This is QBE’s version of identity theft coverage, if your identity is stolen it’ll provide guidance and cover costs associated with recovering.
  • Water backup. This will protect your belongings affected by water damage with a separate deductible.
  • Student at school. Your renters policy can extend to a child who’s away at school and needs their own renters policy.
  • Valuable articles. If you have any valuable items, such as jewelry, firearms or antiques, you can insure it for full value for any loss.

What renters insurance discounts can I get?

QBE only offers three discounts that you can get on your renters policy.

  • Multipolicy discount. If your auto insurance is also with QBE, you’ll receive a discount on both policies.
  • Continuous insurance. If you had a renters or homeowners insurance policy before switching to QBE, you’ll be eligible for this discount.
  • Claims-free discount. QBE provides this discount if you haven’t had a recent claim. The longer you’ve gone without a last claim, the greater your discount will be.

Pros and cons of QBE

Pros

  • Wide array of coverages. QBE offers a solid selection of renters coverages, including personal injury and personal security coverage.
  • Service through local agents. QBE operates through its network of independent agents, which means you’ll receive personalized and local service.
  • Financially strong company. QBE has an A rating by AM Best and an A+ rating by S&P 500, which means it’s a financially balanced company that will pay claims and should have steady rates.

Cons

  • Questionable customer service reputation. Online reviews on the Better Business Bureau’s website and other online sources show mostly negative reviews for claims and customer service.
  • Hard to find an agent. Finding an agent that offers QBE insurance is hard to find and the website doesn’t offer help finding a local agent.
  • Can’t apply online. QBE’s website doesn’t allow you to get a quote online, meaning you’ll have to go through an agent for the entire process.
  • Not known for low rates. QBE’s primary insurance focus is commercial insurance, which means it doesn’t have a strategy in place to offer competitive rates for homeowners or renters policies.
