If you thought that the install sizes of the same game across formats would be the same, you’d be wrong. We’ve listed every available game on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and discovered some startling differences.

In the modern gaming landscape, the two big consoles – PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – have similar user bases and offer comparable hardware capabilities: you therefore wouldn’t expect a big a difference between the same video game on each format. And on the surface that would appear to be the case, with the biggest variance coming in terminology (Square or B, trophy or achievement). However, beneath the surface there seems to be a lot more going on. Despite the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One being far closer in hardware architecture than the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the games releasing on the same day in almost all cases, the download/install sizes can be drastically different. Sometimes, it’s in the gigabytes.

Is it to do with resolution? Or is it simply down to compression? Do some studios find it easier to compress their game through one software development kit over the other? We’re not sure why there is a difference; we only know that there is one, and that it can have big repercussions for users struggling to manage your data cap (for downloads) and your hard drive space.

We’re constantly updating our lists of the install sizes for every PlayStation 4 game and for every Xbox One game – a handy resource and you should bookmark the one most relevant to you. In the process of doing that analysis, we compared the games that appear on both formats to get an accurate view of the disparities of install sizes. You will find the top 20 below:

Please note: these install sizes are taken directly from the respective PlayStation and Xbox stores. They don’t necessarily take into account the latest patch, or DLC, but if you were to go and buy these games now (either at the store or in disc form) this is as close an approximation of the download and install size as you can get.

Since the time of writing, the list of games and their sizes may have changed.
