Upcoming benefits changes to the The Platinum Card® from American Express
Amex has recently announced a series of upcoming benefits changes to the The Platinum Card® from American Express. While specific details are still to be announced, you can expect the following tweaks to take effect starting on January 1, 2020:
- The addition of trip cancellation coverage
- The addition of trip delay reimbursement
- The removal of travel accident insurance
- The removal of roadside assistance
- The extended warranty period will be reduced to one year from two years
- The purchase protection coverage period will be reduced to 90 days from 120
However, you have to meet certain criteria to activate the travel insurance.
Travel insurance policies provided by The Platinum Card® from American Express
Terms you need to know
This refers to air, land or water vehicles licensed to carry passengers for hire and are available to the public. Personal or rental vehicles aren’t common carriers.
For baggage insurance, this refers to the main cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 23 years old. All covered persons must have a permanent residence in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.
This is the trip between the point of departure and the destination as printed on the ticket. The ticket must be issued by the common carrier and paid in full with The Platinum Card® from American Express.
Who is eligible
The main cardholder, their spouse or domestic partner and dependent children under 23 years old are eligible. You must use your card to pay for the common carrier fare to be covered.
What is included
Your bags are covered only if you are:
- A passenger on a common carrier.
- Boarding or exiting the common carrier.
- On a common carrier’s terminal premises before boarding or after exiting the common carrier.
This means if you lose or damage your bags in your hotel, you won’t be compensated by the card’s insurance.
What isn’t included
American Express baggage insurance doesn’t cover items, such as:
- Cash, notes, accounts, bills, deeds, food stamps or evidence of debt or intangible property and securities.
- Credit cards, passports, visas, tickets and documents.
- Plants and animals.
- Food, consumable and perishable items.
- Eyeglasses, sunglasses and contact lenses, hearing aids, artificial teeth and limbs.
- Prescription and nonprescription drugs.
These amounts apply for every covered person on a covered trip:
- $3,000 benefit for baggage replacement while transiting to a common carrier’s terminal with the purpose of boarding the common carrier or when leaving the terminal right after exiting the common carrier.
- $3,000 benefit for carry-on baggage replacement.
- $2,000 benefit for checked baggage replacement.
- $1,000 benefit for loss of high-risk items, including jewelry, sporting equipment, cameras or electronic equipment, computers, audio/visual equipment, wearable technology, items of gold, silver or platinum and furs or articles made mostly with fur or trimmed or lined with fur.
Note: If you lose carry-on and checked baggage, you are limited to a combined benefit of $3,000.
When to file
You have a 30-day window to provide a notice of claim. Contact Amex on toll-free number at 800-645-9700 or call collect at 303-273-6498 if you’re overseas.
Amex will send you a claim form that you have to sign. Send the form, a signed proof of loss and any other required documents within 60 days after receiving further instructions from Amex at AMEX Assurance Company, PO Box 981553, El Paso, TX 79998-9920.
Car rental loss and damage insurance
Who is eligible
You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for car rental insurance:
- You are the main cardholder or an authorized user.
- You signed the car rental agreement.
- You are a permanent resident to one of the 50 United States of America, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands.
- You activated your car rental coverage.
How to activate car rental coverage
- Decline the full collision damage waiver (CDW) at the rental company or pay for a partial CDW.
- Your name is on the rental agreement as the person renting the vehicle.
- You must pay with your The Platinum Card® from American Express or using Amex membership reward points.
What is included
Once you activate your coverage, you have 30 consecutive days of car rental insurance against theft or damage.

What isn’t included
The car rental insurance doesn’t cover all rental vehicles:
- Cargo vans, custom vans, vans with a seating capacity over eight passengers, cube van or box truck and trucks with a weight rating of 10,000 lbs or more.
- Customized vehicles, except for driver’s assistance equipment.
- Vehicles used for commercial purposes.
- Leased vehicles.
- Cars older than 20 years and that aren’t manufactured for 10 or more years.
- Off-road vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds, recreational vehicles, golf or motorized carts, campers, trailers and similar vehicles.
Note: Vehicles rented in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and countries on the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned list aren’t covered.
Also, you aren’t covered for losses or damage caused by:
- Intentional damage that you caused.
- Damage that occurred before you rented the card.
- Manufacturing defects.
- Confiscation by authority.
- Wear and tear, including gradual deterioration.
- Damage due to freezing, mechanical or electrical breakdown or failure unless this is a result of a theft.
- Theft or damage to the rental vehicle that wasn’t locked or secured at the time the theft or damage happened.
- Flats or blowout tires or stolen tires, unless they are damaged by fire, malicious mischief or vandalism.
- Damage to another vehicle.
- Damage to property or items not permanently attached to the rented vehicle.
You are covered with a maximum of $75,000 per rental agreement.
When to file
Report any damage or theft to law enforcement agency as soon as possible. If you don’t, you may not get any insurance benefits.
Provide notice of claim by contacting Amex at their toll-free number 800-338-1670 or, if you’re abroad, call collect at 216-617-2500. You must do this within 30 days.
If Amex needs proof of loss, they will send you a claim form that you must sign. Amex may also require additional documents that you must send within 60 days after Amex provides you with instructions. Send all these documents to:
