52% of Filipino adults, or an estimated 37.3 million people, will shop the Single’s Day sales this year.

We all love a good deal but it turns out that’s not the only reason why people are shopping end-of-year sales events like Single’s Day (11.11). Finder’s survey of 2,011 Filipino adults reveals nearly one-third plan to shop because they’re bored. So why else are Filipinos turning to the 11.11 sales? And equally – why are those choosing not to shop making that choice? Let’s unpack the stats.

Who is most likely to shop?

Filipino adults are planning to shop up a storm at end-of-year shopping events like 11.11 this year. In fact 52% of Filipino adults, or an estimated 37.3 million people, plan to make a purchase at the sales.

Men are more likely than women to partake in the shopping event, with 53% of men saying they plan to make a purchase, compared to 50% of women.

In terms of age, those aged 45-54 are most likely to shop the sales, with 62% of Filipinos in this age group planning to partake in the end-of-year sales. Meanwhile just 42% of those aged 55-64 say the same.

Why are Filipino adults shopping the sales?

We all have our reasons for shopping the big sales events, but it turns out that the most popular reason of all is simply to stave off boredom, with 30% of adults planning to shop the sales for this reason.

That’s roughly double the number of adults planning to shop because they think they’ll find a great deal, with 15% of Filipinos shopping for this reason. The other 7% say they will shop but don’t have any specific reason why.

Men are more likely than women to be a “procrasti-shopper”, with 34% of men planning to shop away their boredom at the sales, compared to 27% of women.

Why aren’t Filipino adults shopping the Single’s Day sales?

It doesn’t take too much imagination to figure out why someone would want to buy an item for less. So why wouldn’t they?

Well, it turns out that a small minority of Filipino adults (2%) think retailers inflate prices before sales, making them want to opt out of the sales altogether.

An additional 4% say the products they want aren’t discounted, while 7% say they’ve never heard of Single’s Day.

Methodology

Finder surveyed a convenience sample of 2,011 Filipino adults via Google surveys on 5-11 October 2021. Google applied weighting to the survey results to be representatively proportionate to the general Internet population. The details of Google’s survey methodology can be found here.
