The basics

Many credit cards tout simplicity as a key selling point. Petal credit card is one of them, but it stands out in two important respects: It charges no fees, and it requires no credit history.

Is “no fees” for real?

Yes, Petal credit card really means it: You won’t pay annual fees, foreign transaction fees, overlimit fees or even late fees when you use this card.

That’s excellent, especially given all the other cards that pile on fees any chance they get. If you’re tired of getting hit with random charges, Petal credit card could be the breath of fresh air you’ve been looking for.

Who’s eligible for the Petal credit card?

Anyone can apply for the card, even if they’re new to credit. That’s unusual for an unsecured credit card that doesn’t charge exorbitant fees. However, if you do have credit, you’ll have a better chance for approval with a fair to good score of at least 620.

If you don’t have a credit history but you feel you’re a responsible borrower, consider Petal credit card over a secured card. With a secured card, you have to put down a security deposit. Not so with Petal credit card.

Is there a catch?

There isn’t a “catch,” exactly. But because Petal credit card doesn’t collect fees, it tries to serve only customers who can responsibly pay their card bills.

Note that you’re required to sync your bank account through a secure third-party when you apply. Petal credit card will have read-only access, and the company can then analyze your digital finances by looking at your income and spending.

Linking your bank account is what allows Petal to accept applicants with limited or no credit history. In an age of expensive credit, that might be a small price to pay to escape fees for good.

The company doesn’t appear to pad its bottom line through sneaky tactics. For example, it doesn’t spike your APR for late or missed payments. According to Petal credit card’s CEO, the company makes money from merchant transaction fees and from consumer interest payments.

The perks

  • No fees.
Petal credit card promises no annual, foreign transaction, overlimit or even late fees.
  • No credit history required.

If you have a credit score, you’ll need a score of 620 or higher to be approved. You can still apply if you don’t have a credit history, though. For applicants with no credit score or limited history, Petal will analyze your income and your financial records — such as checking accounts or bill payments — to determine your eligibility.

  • Potentially high credit limit.

Petal offers credit limits between $500 and $10,000. The maximum is higher than you’ll see with similar cards. However, keep in mind that a high limit isn’t guaranteed, and the credit limit you get will be based on a number of factors.

  • No security deposit required.

Without a credit score, it can be difficult to get an unsecured credit card. You’re typically limited to secured cards, which require security deposits. Petal credit card, on the other hand, doesn’t require a deposit.

    Hi Kelly,

    Thanks for your question.

If you are referring to Petal card’s credit limit, this will depend on your repayment history with them. You have a big chance of getting approved for a credit limit increase if you have a good payment history. You may give Petal Card a call to check their criteria for increasing credit limit.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Anndy

    Hi Kelly,

    Thanks for your question.

You need to log-in to your bank account when you apply for a Petal credit card. If you don’t have a checking account, you may use any other type of bank account but kindly note that they currently don’t support prepaid accounts.

    I hope this helps.

    Cheers,

      Hello Brandon,

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Yes, the Petal Card still reports to all three major credit bureaus.

Although, even if you don’t have a credit score, you can still apply for the Petal card. Petal will analyze your income and your financial records — such as checking accounts or bill payments — to determine your eligibility.

      Hope this helped.

      Cheers,
      Gru
