WePay review

Instant onboarding and white-label processing are among the perks, but support is limited.

WePay is a payment service provider that directly partners with software platforms. It integrates with its platform partners to offer white-label payment processing to merchants. But it doesn’t offer dedicated merchant accounts and its customer support is limited.

WePay services

WePay offers the following services to its platform partners:

  • Payment processing. Your payment solution integrates with your platform to eliminate the need for third-party processors. Your customers can process credit cards, debit cards, ACH and digital wallet payments.
  • Developer resources. WePay offers RESTful APIs designed to integrate with software development kits and open-source coding.
  • Mobile POS. Allow your customers to accept in-person swiped and EMV payments using WePay’s card reader alongside an Android or iOS device.
  • Same-day deposits. As long as your platform’s processing cut-off time is no later than 5 p.m., PT and your merchant holds a Chase bank account, they’ll receive access to same-day deposits at no additional cost.
  • Pricing control. While you’re responsible for covering WePay’s buy rate, you’re free to set merchant markups as you see fit.

WePay pricing and fees

WePay offers three levels of service: Link, Clear and Core. While it advertises a transparent buy rate on its website, no pricing information is available. Contact WePay directly to inquire about the level of service you’re interested in and its corresponding fees.

What’s the difference between Link, Clear and Core?

The main difference between WePay’s three levels of service is how much control you have. Here’s how the options break down:

What is it?

Refer your merchants to Chase Payments and earn a transaction fee on every payment you facilitate.

Integrate Chase Payments directly into your platform to offer your merchants a payment processing solution.

Pros and cons

  • Multiple service tiers. There are three ways to integrate WePay's processing power into your platform — each with its own features designed to meet the needs of different business models.
  • Highly customizable. The higher your service tier, the more control you have over customer onboarding, checkout forms and customization iframes.
  • White-label processing. Offer your customers self-branded processing.
  • Instant onboarding. With an integrated payment solution, your customers enjoy a swift and straightforward onboarding process.

  • Limited support. WePay's partner support is only available by email.
  • No dedicated merchant accounts. WePay may not be the best fit for your customers — especially those running large businesses that need a dedicated merchant account.

WePay reviews and complaints

As of Octovber 2020, WePay receives an A rating from the Better Business Bureau and maintains a TrustScore of 4.2 out of 5 based on 687 reviews.

Despite WePay's lack of customer support options, a number of positive reviews mention the success of its online ticketing system. That said, complaints from customers on the processing end of WePay mention multiple transaction holds while attempting to accept payments.

What is WePay?

WePay was founded in 2008 as a peer-to-peer payments provider. In 2010 it released its first API and in 2012, shifted gears to focus on payment processing for third-party software platforms.

WePay was acquired by JPMorgan Chase in 2017 and was able to differentiate its offerings with three tiers of service alongside same-day deposits for merchants with Chase bank accounts.

How do I contact WePay support?

Support for WePay platform partners is limited to email inquiries — but WePay doesn’t provide a customer support email address on its website. Instead, partners must complete a support request on its website for a response from the support team within one to two business days.

Bottom line

WePay’s technical products are impressive but aren’t for everyone. With customizable APIs and white-label processing, it could be a tidy fit for established platforms able to take advantage of its service. But a lack of customer support options could prove problematic for smaller software developers.
