- Keyed transactions. Processing fee of 2.20% each, plus $0.10.
- Early termination fee. Ending a 12-month contract early could result in a termination fee. But the Paya representative we spoke with wouldn’t disclose the exact fee amount.

- Misleading marketing. Despite numerous mentions of POS hardware on Paya’s website, it doesn’t actually offer any card readers or terminals.
- No available rates. You won’t find any information about rates or fees on Paya’s website.
- Early termination fee. Paya’s service is available month-to-month or under a 12-month agreement — but if you commit to a contract be prepared for an early termination fee.
What other products will I need?Paya’s payment platform lacks two products required to process payments:
- POS hardware. While Paya mentions in-store devices on its website, it doesn’t sell point-of-sale hardware. You’ll need to source any card readers or terminals you need from a third-party provider.
- Checking account. To deposit customer payments, Paya needs to connect to an externally-linked business checking account.

Formerly known as Sage Payment Solutions, this payments platform was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia with additional offices in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.
In 2018, the platform was rebranded and now calls itself Paya. It processes $27 billion in merchant transactions annually and boasts over 300 software integrations.
Customer reviews and complaintsPaya is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited business and receives an A+ BBB rating. But despite high marks from the BBB, its customer feedback is predominantly negative.
Of its eight BBB customer reviews, all report a negative experience and award the company one out of five stars. Customer feedback on third-party Paya reviews is also negative.
Many reviews mention transaction holds, compliance fees and hefty early termination fees. That said, many of these reviews target Sage Payment Solutions — Paya’s former identity prior to its rebranding.
