It offers swift onboarding and developer tools but its ambiguous rates and services are worrisome.

Pros and cons

  • Speedy onboarding. Paya’s Enable service is designed for quick approval and onboarding to get you up and running with Paya in under 15 minutes.
  • Niche industry features. Paya’s industry features include online school enrollment for educators, HIPAA-compliant security for healthcare providers and API suites for B2B ERP platforms.
  • 24/7 tech support. Paya’s tech support is available by phone 24 hours a day.

  • Misleading marketing. Despite numerous mentions of POS hardware on Paya’s website, it doesn't actually offer any card readers or terminals.
  • No available rates. You won't find any information about rates or fees on Paya’s website.
  • Early termination fee. Paya’s service is available month-to-month or under a 12-month agreement — but if you commit to a contract be prepared for an early termination fee.

What other products will I need?

Paya’s payment platform lacks two products required to process payments:

  • POS hardware. While Paya mentions in-store devices on its website, it doesn't sell point-of-sale hardware. You'll need to source any card readers or terminals you need from a third-party provider.
  • Checking account. To deposit customer payments, Paya needs to connect to an externally-linked business checking account.

What is Paya?

Formerly known as Sage Payment Solutions, this payments platform was founded in 1989 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia with additional offices in Florida, Ohio and Virginia.

Paya reviews and complaints

Paya is a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited business and receives an A- BBB rating, as of October 2020. But despite high marks from the BBB, its customer feedback is predominantly negative.

Many reviews mention transaction holds, compliance fees and hefty early termination fees. That said, many of these reviews target Sage Payment Solutions — Paya’s former identity prior to its rebranding.
