What online programming courses are available?

A seemingly endless number of schools and universities offer online programming courses. Once you’ve decided what’s most important to you, you’ll be able to research schools based on your needs.

Undergraduate courses

Depending on the school, this can involve general information technology degrees or those pertaining strictly to programming. Either way, undergraduate courses can give you a wide base of information and knowledge of other fields in computing that will be useful later in your career.

Postgraduate courses

Computing and programming is a field where no amount of education is too much. The walls of the world’s best computing companies are covered with the degrees and PhD’s of the people who work there. If you want to add your certificate to the wall, consider a postgraduate degree.

Short courses and professional development

Whenever you want to add a new language or cover more ground, the Internet is full of short, specific courses.

What are the tuition fees and other expenses?

Tuition for online programming courses will vary depending on the school and your level of study. A general range — though a wide one — can be anywhere from $500 to $12,000. The good news is that you won’t be paying for additional room and board like you would at most traditional colleges. There may be additional costs for things like books and supplies.

What are the career opportunities for programming?

As more people engage with technology and as more countries are opened up to computers and the Internet, the career prospects in computer programming are likely to continue being in demand. Some of the more common career opportunities are:

  • Software developer
  • Web developer
  • Network architect
  • Systems analyst
  • Database administrator
