Home Sweet Home Alone preview

If you’ve somehow tuned out of the Home Alone franchise after the first 2 (excellent) movies, you might be surprised to find out that Home Sweet Home Alone is the sixth entry in the film series. Yet, judging by the trailer, it’s basically just the first Home Alone… but British?

The premise, at least, is identical. Max Mercer is a mischievous boy who is left behind when his family travels to Japan for the holidays. Because they take 2 flights and no one notices he isn’t among the rest of the clan? Logic doesn’t really have a place in this franchise and apparently, advancements in technology don’t help the parents figure out their mistake sooner. But we digress.

Initially, the young boy revels in his newfound freedom. However, 2 robbers (a married couple this time) target his house, attempting to steal a priceless heirloom. As a result, Max decides to protect his territory from the trespassers by setting up ingenious traps and using household items to wreak havoc. Violence follows.

Macaulay Culkin, who starred as Kevin McCallister in the first 2 movies, confirmed that he won’t appear in Home Sweet Home Alone. The lead role will be played by Archie Yates, whom you might know from Jojo Rabbit. Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Rob Delaney (Catastrophe) will portray the robbers. The cast also includes Aisling Bea, Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Ally Maki and Chris Parnell.

Besides the plot, there is another connection to the original movies: Devin Ratray, who played Kevin’s older brother, will reprise his role as Buzz. He’s now a police officer. We’re sure that he’ll sort out the mess in no time.

Archie Yates was excellent in Jojo Rabbit, while Kemper and Delaney both have solid track records of being funny on camera. Consequently, Home Sweet Home Alone might be worth a look for the cast alone. Plus, it’s always possible that the trailer left out crucial information which differentiates this reboot from the original. You’ll need to give it a stream and find out.
