Game of Thrones Season 8 is upon us. Here’s how you can catch the final season of the epic drama.
The wait between seasons of Game of Thrones always feels like a lifetime (spare a thought for the book fans, who are now well and truly out in the wilderness), but now we can finally dive into the show’s final season.
Sky and Neon are the only two services where you can watch HBO shows on the same day as they’re released in the US. Depending on whether you prefer watching it on TV or streaming, you’re going to want to sign up for their services to catch Game of Thrones as soon as it airs.
There are two ways to watch Game of Thrones through Sky: watch it live on their SoHo channel, or record it and watch it back later. With Neon, you will be able to stream new episodes the same day as the show premieres. For those of us in New Zealand, watching live may require a furtive lunchtime commitment to headphones and the laptop or tablet every Monday (or a sickie), but it’s guaranteed to give you a spoiler-free experience.
Alternatively, Neon subscribers can access the newest episodes at their convenience, starting a little later after the show ends by just pressing ‘play’. As mentioned, Sky subscribers can record the live episodes or watch it again through SoHo. Each new episode will be available to watch on both Sky and Neon after broadcast, so you can catch up whenever you’re ready.
Once the season has totally wrapped up (there will only be six episodes this season), you’ll be able to download Game of Thrones through all the usual avenues.
Where can I watch Game of Thrones Season 8 legally and how much will it cost?
Both Sky and Neon are legal avenues to watch the battle for Westeros. The price of a Sky subscription will depend on the channels you want access to. As for NEON, you’ll need the TV package to watch Game of Thrones, which costs $11.99/month.
What channel is Game of Thrones on in New Zealand?
Game of Thrones is on SoHo (010) on Sky and streams on Neon later on premiere day. Each new episode will be available to watch on Sky On Demand, SKY Go and Neon after broadcast, every Monday, so you can catch up whenever you’re ready.
What time does Game of Thrones air in New Zealand?
Game of Thrones airs at 1pm Monday Auckland time on SoHo, which is 9pm (EST) Sunday night in the US. There’s also an 8:30pm replay. New episodes will be available a little later on Neon as well.
Why don’t other services offer Game of Thrones?
Since the crackdown in the US on outside services live streaming and accessing shows from HBO and Netflix, New Zealand, much like other countries outside the UK and the States, has suffered the consequences of no free to air programming. Yes, you can do a cut around through unblocking services such as VPNs, but remember, they are outside government regulations so ensure you make a reasoned decision.
Why it’s not all bad
The show is available in New Zealand at the same time as in the US, so at least you will be able to avoid spoilers. Plus, subscribing to Sky or NEON gives you access to tons of addictive content.
No wildlings in New Zealand then… yet.
