Direct flights are available from more than a dozen cities across New Zealand, or if you’re coming from abroad, you can also fly direct from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Nadi or Singapore.
When there’s a sale, you should be able to find fares to Wellington from major airports – Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown – for less than $100 each way. If you’re travelling from a smaller airport, like Dunedin, Hamilton or Rotorua, you should be able to find sale fares for $125-$150 each way. If fares aren’t on sale, expect to pay the average prices, as displayed below, from your closest airport.
The winter months see fewer tourists, which drive up the price of flights. Travelling between May and September will most likely get you the best fare.
To avoid having to pay higher fares, aim to book your Wellington flights as far in advance as you can. On average, fares start to increase about seven weeks in advance.

If you live in a city that doesn’t have a direct flight, you will need to factor in a connecting flight and waiting time at one of these airports before catching your flight to Wellington.
Wellington Airport is in the suburb of Rongotai, approximately nine kilometres by road from the city centre.
To get from Wellington Airport to your hotel, you can catch a taxi from outside the baggage claim area of the main terminal. Fares can vary according to traffic conditions, but you can expect to pay $30-$40 to the CBD. Shuttles are available starting from $15 pp if you don’t mind sharing your ride with other passengers. You can book a shuttle online or find one outside the baggage claim area.
Rideshare apps Uber, Zoomy and Ola also operate from Wellington Airport. You can meet your driver in the designated pick-up spot by following the walkway to the southern end of the car rental area.
