Can I travel from New Zealand to Hong Kong?

Currently, New Zealanders are not allowed to travel to Hong Kong for leisure reasons. The international border is only open to Kiwis who are citizens or permanent residents of Hong Kong. Keep in mind that Hong Kong does not recognise dual citizenship with New Zealand.

If you're New Zealander and residing in Macau, Taiwan and mainland China, these are the only exceptions to the border closure, provided visitors have not travelled internationally for 21 days.

As of 26 May 2021, Hong Kong is making it’s first step towards international travel by allowing New Zealander travellers in if they’ve been in Singapore for 14 days.

Are there any exemptions for travelling to Hong Kong?

New Zealander travellers who are citizens or permanent residents of Hong Kong are able to return at any point as long as they haven't travelled to Brazil, Ireland, South Africa or the UK recently.

Hong Kong residents travelling from: 

  • Singapore: Open borders, no quarantine restrictions from 26 May.
  • Brazil, Ireland, South Africa and the UK: Restricted.
  • Other countries and regions: 21-day mandatory quarantine.
Non-Hong Kong residents travelling from:

  • Singapore: Open borders, no quarantine restrictions from 26 May.
  • Overseas countries and regions: Restricted.
  • Mainland China, Macao and Taiwan: Open (with 14-day quarantine) unless they've travelled overseas within 21 days of departure.

Can I travel to Hong Kong if I'm a permanent resident or citizen?

Yes, if you're New Zealander and a permanent resident or citizen of Hong Kong, you are allowed to return to your home.

Like any traveller entering the country, those coming from New Zealand will be subject to the latest quarantine and COVID test rules.

What are the entry requirements for Hong Kong coming from New Zealand?

Do I need a permit to enter Hong Kong?

No, at this point in time New Zealander travellers do not need a permit to enter Hong Kong. Standard visa requirements apply.

Do I need proof I've had a vaccine to travel?

No, Kiwis don’t need proof of vaccination to visit Hong Kong.

Do I need proof I've had a negative test before departing for Hong Kong?

Yes, all authorised New Zealander travellers who are entering from a high-risk area need to provide a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours of departure. Travellers from New Zealand will also be tested upon arrival to Hong Kong.

High-risk areas include 20 destinations such as Canada, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Returning Kiwi residents will be barred if they’ve stayed in a high-risk zone for more than 2 hours within 21 days of departure.

Do I need to quarantine when I arrive in Hong Kong?

Yes, there is a compulsory 21-day hotel quarantine for travellers arriving from New Zealand, except those from Macau, Taiwan and Mainland China who only need to quarantine for 14 days. From 26 May, New Zealander travellers arriving from Singapore will be exempt from the quarantine rule as a result of the two-way travel bubble.

A hotel reservation for the duration of the stay must be presented by Kiwi visitors before departure.
