Catering primarily to skiers and snowboarders of intermediate level, the Rainbow ski area has a decent amount of runs to satisfy your thirst for the slopes while in the Nelson/Marlborough region. At a height over 1,760 metres, snowfall is plentiful throughout the season and uncrowded slopes make this a good option for improving your skills on the well-groomed trails.
Snowboarders will be particularly interested in the range of jumps and bumps over the varied terrain, as well as the thrilling terrain park – definitely not for the faint of heart.
Rainbow is 112 kilometres from Nelson – or a 3 hour and 10-minute drive – and a 3-hour drive from Marlborough Airport. There is no accommodation near the slopes, but you can make use of the options available at St Arnaud, just 35 minutes away.
