Officially Momona Airport (DUD), Dunedin’s airport connects the South Island city with the country’s major cities – Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington.
Dunedin sits about a 3.5-hour drive east of Queenstown and 5 hours south of Christchurch, so if you’re looking for flights from other New Zealand cities than what’s above, or from overseas, it could be worth comparing flights to Queenstown and flights to Christchurch too.
When there’s a sale, you should be able to find fares to Dunedin around the $80-$100 each way mark from Christchurch. Expect to pay almost double if you’re flying from the North Island. While those are sale fares, the average price travellers pay for flights to Dunedin from your nearest airport can be found below.
The winter months see fewer travellers passing through, which drives up the price of flights. Without easy access to snow areas like Christchurch and Queenstown airports, travelling between May and September will most likely get you the best fare, with fares bottoming out in the middle of winter.
Prices for flights to Dunedin increase the closer to your travel date, and it’s recommended to book fares at least six to seven weeks in advance. If you do find a sale, it could be worth booking when that’s available – even if it is months prior to your departure.
Direct flights to Dunedin are available from only New Zealand’s cities, with some sample flight times indicated below.
If you live in a city that isn’t listed below, you can book a connecting flight. Alternatively, you may find it cost-effective to book a flight into Christchurch or Queenstown and drive to Dunedin.
Only two airlines currently offer domestic flights to and from Dunedin’s airport.
Momona Airport is located about 24km west of the city centre.
If you aren’t picking up a hire car at the airport, you do have a few options for getting into the city centre.
If you were hoping to take an Uber or Ola from the airport, you’re currently unable to. You can be dropped off by a rideshare service, but they aren’t permitted to pick up from the terminal.
