Cyber Monday deals that will actually save you money 2020

Let's talk sales. BIG online shopping sales. Welcome to Cyber Monday, happening on 2nd December 2019.

Last updated:

What is Cyber Monday? It’s one of the biggest online shopping days of the year and specialises in exclusive bargains for gadgets, electronics, fashion, gifts and more. It’s an annual one-day shopping event that occurs on the Monday after Thanksgiving, but it’s not just for America. New Zealand and Australian stores have jumped on board too.

Cyber Monday began as a way to encourage customers to shop online, especially during the beginning of the Christmas shopping period. It was noticed that the majority of retailers had increased sales starting the Monday after the American Thanksgiving holiday (possibly due to the impending Christmas shop or because they’ve just had their big pay day), so marketing companies generated the idea of a click frenzy shopping day to cash in on the consumer increase.

Is Cyber Monday only American?

Kind of. It’s typically American (and more recently, UK) websites that participate – but more and more New Zealnad retailers are joining in, meaning there are great bargains, deals and discounts to be had from your local favourites. Most major American and UK stores ship to New Zealand too (sometimes even for free), so New Zealanders can take full advantage of Cyber Monday.

When is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday – this year it’s on Monday 2nd December, 2019. A lot of store’s offers are available from Black Friday (29 November) to 11:59pm on Cyber Monday (2nd December) – and some even extending beyond that.

Is Cyber Monday like Click Frenzy?

Yes. Click Frenzy was actually based on the idea of Cyber Monday.

Are the deals only on Cyber Monday?

No. Deals start the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) on what’s called Black Friday. It’s the first day of the holiday and Christmas shopping period, and therefore the first day of sales. Some even argue that you’re better off going shopping on Black Friday (or even on Thanksgiving), as by the time Cyber Monday rolls around you’ll find you’ve been pipped to the post with an out-of-stock sign. According to Adobe research, it’s even suggested that prices are lowest on Thanksgiving and increase as Black Friday and Cyber Monday come around. It’s up to you, honestly, but just know that the sales do start as early as Thanksgiving Thursday.

What is ShopMate, and how can I use it to order something from America?

Have you ever wanted to buy something from the US but not been able to because it doesn’t do international shipping? My US offers a fixed US address for you to send your US-shipping-only items to, and then they’ll forward your item from that address to your New Zealand one.

Tips & tricks for New Zealanders on Cyber Monday

  • Do your research. Unlike Click Frenzy, many retailers publish their deals before the day, meaning you have time to consider your options and really find the best bargain. Then, there’s also Black Friday, US Thanksgiving Day, and PRE-Thanksgiving sales you should consider. Our suggestion? Start hunting for bargains now, because a lot of retailers are already advertising, if not selling, them.
  • Make sure the retailer ships to New Zealand. Always a good one to check before you get excited over a deal. That being said, you can now take advantage of the MyUS service, which provides you with a US postal address to get items shipped to, before delivering them to New Zealand.
  • Shop around and shop early. You might find a better deal elsewhere or prior to Cyber Monday. If it’s a bargain on Thursday or Friday with a price you’re willing to pay, jump on it before it either goes up (a common ploy many retailers do to make a little more from the shopping hype) or before it is sold out.
