With over 25 years of experience in insuring Kiwis, Insure Direct works hard to provide cover for drivers that may be turned away from other providers. If you’ve had a criminal conviction, have a modified vehicle, use your car for earning an income with Uber or are on a learner’s or restricted licence, this provider welcomes all applications and will work hard to get you covered.

Underwritten by Tower Insurance Limited with a financial strength rating of A- (excellent), Insure Direct has three levels of cover for non-commercial drivers and Roadside Assistance for those times when you get stuck with a flat tyre or lock your keys in your car.

Whether you hold a full licence or have struggled to find cover with other insurers for your situation, read on to see what Insure Direct has to offer.

What cover options does Insure Direct offer?

Insure Direct has three cover options for personal vehicle use: Comprehensive, Third party, fire and theft, and Third party only.

For an extra cost each month you can add on Roadside Assistance. This gives you three callouts per year for incidents such as getting a flat tyre, locking your keys in your car, or needing your battery jump-started. The service can also do windscreen repair and replacement, tow you to the nearest garage in case of a breakdown, and help with theft, break-ins and accidents.

There are also optional benefits that you can add on for windscreens and rental cars.

To apply for Insure Direct car insurance, you can download an application form from the website, fill it in online and then send it by email.

What does Insure Direct generally exclude?

It’s important to carefully read the policy wording before taking out a policy as you are never covered for every situation or event that you might want to make a claim for. While many exclusions may be the same across providers, there may be small differences that you need to be aware of.

Some general exclusions of Insure Direct’s car insurance policies include:

  • Hire and lease cars
  • Loss to your property
  • When you agree to accept responsibility when you are not at fault
  • Criminal and reckless acts
  • Mechanical failure
  • Confiscation by the authorities
  • Drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Unlicensed drivers
  • Using the car in an unsafe manner
  • Using the vehicle for business activities
  • Racing and off-roading
  • War and terrorism
  • Unlisted accessories
  • Faults and defects
  • Fines and damages
  • Cars that are covered by another insurance policy

How much excess will I pay?

When you make an application for Insure Direct car insurance, you will be informed of the excess that is required should you need to make a claim. This will be confirmed on the certificate of insurance and can differ person to person depending on personal circumstances.

How do I make a claim?

The process for making a claim with Insure Direct depends on what has happened to your vehicle:

  • Theft. If your car has been stolen, notify the police as soon as possible and make sure to get an Incident Acknowledgement Form. Then, you can either call Insure Direct to start your claim over the phone or download a claim form from the website.
  • Accidents. Download a claim form from the Insure Direct website or contact the claims team by phone. If you took out your policy through a broker, you will need to contact them to start your claim.
  • Windscreens. As long as your payments are up-to-date, you can get approval for windscreen repair over the phone.

What makes Insure Direct different?

Sometimes comparing car insurance options can be a little tricky if you don’t fall into the ‘normal’ profile that providers like to see. Insure Direct welcomes applications from all people and aims to help when you’ve been turned away from other companies.
