When should I wear a disposable surgical mask?
The World Health Organization advises that wearing a mask should be a normal part of being around other people while COVID-19 exists in the community.
Even if masks are not required by public health orders, disposable medical masks are recommended for the following groups of people:
- People aged 60+
- People with underlying conditions and the immunocompromised
- People who are feeling unwell with mild flu or cold symptoms
- Anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 recently or who are waiting for test results.
In New Zealand, a mandate is currently in place that requires the public to wear masks while in public indoor spaces and on public transport. This could be a disposable mask, a reusable cloth mask, or a multi-use KN95 mask. Bandanas and scarves are no longer acceptable as a face covering.
You can check the latest mask advice in New Zealand by visiting the Ministry of Health website.
How do I wear a surgical mask?
According to the World Health Organization, before you touch the mask, make sure you’ve cleaned your hands with an alcohol-based sanitiser or soap and water.
Make sure your mouth and nose are covered by the mask and avoid touching the mask while it’s on to avoid contamination. If you do touch it, be sure to clean your hands afterwards.
When you need to take the mask off, be sure not to touch the front of the mask and remove it from the back and discard it as soon as possible.
The CDC has the following advice for people that wear disposable masks:
- Do not wear a mask that has gaps around your nose or sides of your face.
- Surgical masks should be disposed of if they get dirty or wet. Keep another disposable mask in your pocket or bag in case this happens.
- If you want to have better protection, you can wear 2 masks at the same time such as a disposable mask underneath a cloth mask.
- To make your surgical single-use mask fit better on your face, use ties or elastic bands to secure it instead of the existing ear loops.
