Every item of clothing and gear you need for ski season 2021

Prepare your winter wardrobe for this season's snow with our full guide below.

Heading to the snow is always something to look forward to. However, if there’s something that will quickly put a dampener on your time at the snow, it’s being unprepared and really, really cold.

The weather on New Zealand’s ski fields is unpredictable, and you want to be ready and equipped with every piece of gear necessary to shred the slopes. Below you can find each item we recommend purchasing before heading off, as well as some top picks to make your online shopping experience a little easier.

1. Jacket

Let’s start with the most obvious, shall we? You’re not going to get very far on the slopes without a ski jacket. When picking out a jacket there are a few things you really want to look out for. You want a jacket that keeps the snow out while allowing heat and moisture generated by your body to vent out.

It’s important to find a jacket that’s both waterproof and breathable. The level of waterproofing on a jacket is measured in numbers that refer to a water test – 5,000mm is low waterproofing, 10,000mm average, 20,000mm high and 28,000mm extremely high.

The breathability of a jacket is usually represented in grams, with 5,000 on the lower side and anything 20,000 or more very breathable.

2. Gloves

When going to the snow there’s one accessory you simply cannot live without. Gloves are a fundamental aspect of your ski gear and have the power to really make or break your experience. You have the choice between gloves and mittens. Gloves have a lot more mobility and access but mittens do provide more warmth as your fingers share the same compartment. However, you’ll need to remove your mittens for certain situations like accessing your pockets, phone or adjusting your gear.

3. Thermals

One aspect of ski gear you might not think of right away is your base layers, also known as thermals. Thermals provide much-needed temperature regulation and move any moisture away from your skin while you’re active. They’re important because they allow you to keep cool while you’re on the slopes and warm while you rest.

There are four main types of materials when it comes to base layers: silk, cotton, synthetic and merino wool. These materials come in a variety of weights. The higher the weight number the warmer the layer will be. For those heading to the snow we would suggest merino wool layers as they’ll keep you dry as you sweat and warm when you’re resting up.

4. Pants

You’re also going to want to get your hands on some good quality ski pants. Ensure your pants have a range of pockets for storing your possessions like your phone, wallet and keys. Leg gaiters are another pant aspect you’ll enjoy as they stop snow from entering up your ski pants and keep your feet and legs dry.

Regular, slim and loose are the three main types of ski pant fits and all depend on your preference. Similar to ski jackets, you want to ensure the material of your pants is waterproof and allows ventilation. Waist adjusters and stretch fabrics are also good aspects to look out for when shopping for ski pants.

5. All-in-ones

For those expecting to experience very cold temperatures, an all-in-one ski outfit could be the way to go. Also known as onesies, the idea behind them is similar to mittens. The all-in-one compartment allows your body to keep itself warm. These outfits keep you warmer on the slopes as there’s no split between a jacket and pants for snow or wind to get through.

These have also become increasingly popular purely because they’re fashionable. Onesies tend to be a little more flattering but are a hassle for women when it comes time to use the bathroom.

6. Headgear

One of the most obvious and important items of gear to pick up is your headgear. You actually have a few options here. Obviously we would recommend wearing a helmet no matter how experienced a skier or snowboarder you are. On top of that you’ll want to pick up something to keep your head and face warm and protected. This can be achieved with a good old-fashioned beanie and face mask combo or you can go for a balaclava.

A lower face snow mask or full head balaclava will allow you to keep your face protected from windburn and some severely chapped lips. However, if you have the joy of a sunny windless day on the slopes you may only need to rock a beanie.

7. Sweater

Obviously, you’re not going to be spending all your time out on the snow. Whether you’re ducking into the local tavern for some lunch or are resting up with some hot cocoa, a sweater is going to be your off-snow uniform. At the snow, you’re going to get some good quality use out of a sweater.

Not only are these incredibly comfortable but they’re great to still keep you warm through the nights. The style is obviously completely up to you but we would suggest something with a turtleneck and made of woollen material for the ultimate comfort and warmth.

8. Boots

You’re obviously not going to be wearing a pair of trainers to the snow. Frostbite is not cute or an ideal situation.

Snow boots are the only way to go and there’s actually a wide range of styles available. To clarify, snow boots are definitely different to winter boots as they serve different purposes. Snow boots are designed to protect your feet from the snow and are waterproof. Many also have ankle support and heavy-duty grip to save you from slipping on the snow.

When picking your boots most people can wear their normal shoe size but some boot manufacturers size up as they assume you’ll be wearing thick socks. You want your snow boots to be snug but not constricting, and flexible but not flopping around.

There’s also the option of tall or short boots. Tall boots offer more protection from the snow and increased ankle support and shorter boots provide more mobility and are easier to take on and off.

9. Goggles/sunglasses

Whether you’re skiing or just heading to the snow for a winter wonderland, you’ll need eye protection. The sun’s rays bounce off the snow and can be quite damaging for your eyes. Therefore we highly recommend picking up a pair of goggles (for those who are skiing or snowboarding) or heavy-duty sunglasses (for those who just want to chill in the snow).

Sunglasses are easier to pick out, as you just need to make sure they have heavy-duty UV protection.

Goggles, on the other hand, have a few other factors to keep in mind. You want to get the right size for your head, make sure they’re compatible with your helmet and purchase the correct lens for your skiing conditions. It’s also very handy to look out for anti-fogging features on goggles.
