Frequently asked questions about Black Friday travel deals

When do the Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel sales start?

Black Friday officially starts on 27 November in 2020 and Cyber Monday falls on 30 November, but often the sales start earlier – some have already started! You can find the early sales listed above in our deals section.

Deals that launch on the day tend to start at midnight, so it could be worth staying up late on 26 November. After all, the early bird usually does catch the worm.

Which Black Friday travel deals have launched early?

Just because Black Friday starts on a Friday, that doesn’t always mean the sales do too. We find each year that some big names drop both official and unofficial Black Friday deals up to a week or two in advance. This year, some of them are:

  • Save up to 30% on hotel stays
  • G Adventures: Get up to 21% off worldwide tours and secure them with just a $1 deposit. Available on more than 450 itineraries for departures until 2022. Book by 30 November.
  • Jetstar: Although not an official Black Friday deal, Jetstar is offering $49 domestic flights.

When do Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales end?

Black Friday sales are supposed to end close of business on Friday, however many travel agents extend their sale dates through the weekend and onto Monday (Cyber Monday) 30 November 2020.

Not all companies extend their sales, so if you’ve got your eye on a deal, it’s best to check when it ends to miss out on the bargain! Remember, the really good deals almost always sell out first.

How do I find the best Black Friday travel deals?

  • Keep an eye on this page. We’ll be updating this space as often as possible throughout the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend. Every time a new sale drops you’ll be the first to know right here.
  • Keep your dates and destinations flexible. While there are a lot of sales, not every destination on every date will necessarily be discounted. Keep an open mind on where and when to go to nab the best deal possible.
  • Start looking now. It’s not too early (or too late) to score a bargain. Look and book now because come tomorrow that travel deal might be gone.

What’s considered a good Black Friday travel deal?

This is the criteria we use to consider a sale to be strong:

  • Flights. Domestic flights on budget carrier Jetstar can drop to around $50 each way, which is a bargain right now.
  • Accommodation. We often see deals from and Wotif discounting hotels by up to 50% and throwing a promo code for 8-10% on top of that.
  • Tours and packages. Contiki, G Adventures, TopDeck and TourRadar are no strangers to Black Friday. Look for deals of 25-30% off for bookings made directly with the companies and up to 60% with aggregators such as TourRadar that also offer deals from smaller operators.
  • Cruises. Look for $1 deposits, 30-50% off second passengers in cabins and extra onboard credit from P&O Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

What type of travel deals are available?

Anything and everything goes. Flights, hotels, cruises and tours are the most common travel items on the sales rack over Black Friday. We’ve also seen travel insurance policies, experiences and day tours on sale over Cyber Weekend.

Which travel brands have Black Friday sales?

While the offers change every year, these brands have had Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in the past. We recommend keeping an eye on them each year for their offers:

  • Jetstar
  • Qantas
  • Flight Centre
  • Skyscanner
  • Expedia
  • G Adventures
  • Contiki
  • Qatar Airways
  • Air New Zealand
  • RedBalloon
  • Royal Caribbean
  • Singapore Airlines

How long do the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales last?

Black Friday sales officially start at midnight and end at the close of business on Friday (27 November 2020). However, many companies extend their sales through the weekend (Cyber Weekend) and on to Monday (Cyber Monday) 30 Novemer 2020.The sales might be around for a few days, but this doesn’t mean that the lowest prices or the best travel dates will still be available by Monday.

Additionally, not all companies extend their sales. If you’ve got your eye on a deal, it’s best to check when it ends to avoid missing out.

Do flights go on sale during Black Friday?

Yes. Every year airlines and online travel companies take part in Black Friday offering discounted flights.Popular sites where you can book flights that often join in the sale are:

  • Jetstar
  • Qantas
  • Virgin Australia
  • Flight Centre
  • Qatar
  • Air New Zealand
  • Emirates

What should I consider when booking travel during the coronavirus pandemic?

  • Travel restrictions. At the moment, New Zealanders are only allowed to travel locally. If you don’t want to risk international borders opening by a certain date, stick to local destinations for now. Before you book, check out the latest domestic travel restrictions to see where you can go and what permits you may need.
  • Book flexible deals. The situation changes constantly. To ensure your holiday goes as planned, look for flexible flights, accommodation and experiences. These let you change your travel dates or destinations without penalty.
  • Travel insurance. Yes, there is such a thing as domestic travel insurance. While it won’t cover you for any COVID-19-related claims, it can cover you for lost, stolen or damaged items. Or, if you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to other reasons such as an accident.

Is it worth booking international flights during a pandemic?

New Zealand currently has a ban on international travel with no set date on when it will lift. This doesn’t stop airlines from dropping enviable sales to places far and wide on Black Friday though. Before you jump the gun and book that $1,000 flight to Europe, check if you can cancel or move your trip to a later date. This flexibility can give you peace of mind and save you money should borders remain closed by the time your trip comes around.

If you do book, travel insurance might help cover any unexpected costs if you can’t travel or if you injure yourself and can no longer travel. Bear in mind any COVID-19-related reasons will not be honoured.

Are travel deals really better on Black Friday?

There’s no denying that Black Friday serves up some spectacular deals. Whether they’ll be better than sales you’ll find throughout the year or on Boxing Day is anyone’s guess.

In 2019, we saw a handful of travel companies better themselves for Boxing Day. These included Jetstar, and Klook.

It’s up to you if you want to take a punt and wait until Boxing Day. Our advice? If you see a deal on Black Friday that hits the mark, get it or regret it.
