Best 5-star hotels in Auckland

Luxury accommodation is all about the experience, and that will start the moment you walk through the front lobby of a 5-star hotel. One of the most impressive hotel lobbies in Auckland is at SO/ Auckland, with mannequins wearing designer outfits, a huge chandelier and Instagram-worthy spots for you to snap a photo or two.

You’ll no doubt be in for an unforgettable stay in any of Auckland’s 5-star hotels with rooms starting at around $300 a night. You’ll notice the cleanliness, exceptional service and luxurious amenities, and wake up each morning in a bed that you’ll wish you could take home with you.

5-star hotels are about much more than location, but you’ll find our top picks conveniently-located in the central city. Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour is right on the waterfront making it a great spot for Auckland nightlife and daytime strolls, plus its just footsteps away from the ferry terminal if you want to head to Waiheke or Devonport. Or if you’d prefer to have easy access to the Sky Tower, casino, a theatre and numerous bars and restaurants, a stay at the SKYCITY Grand Hotel will suit you well.

Best boutique hotels in Auckland

Boutique hotels are becoming more common in Auckland thanks to their intimacy, interesting design and personal touches that can’t be found anywhere else. Many are in the central city with between 25 and 200 rooms, but you can also find boutique hotels in some of the outer suburbs that cater for fewer guests. One of the largest in the CBD with 190 rooms, M Social, prides itself on distinctive hospitality with a unique design experience.

Walking into a boutique hotel like Hotel Grand Windsor or Hotel DeBrett, you’ll notice the mix of classic and art deco design which extends into your bedroom or suite. Depending on the hotel you choose, each room may be decorated differently. It’s not uncommon to find unique features such as bathtubs in front of full-wall windows.

Best cheap hotels in Auckland

Auckland can be an expensive city, and if you’re a student, a couple on a budget or just looking for the cheapest possible option, there are plenty of choices in the City of Sails. Starting from just $30 a night, it’s possible to find cheap accommodation in Auckland. While this is the price for a dorm bed in a hostel, it’s a fraction of the cost of a hotel.

In the central city, Auckland has a number of properties catering to foreign travellers with both dorms and private rooms. Two options that we like are Haka Lodge and Attic Backpackers. It’s also possible to find backpackers and lodges in the outer suburbs, and these are often cheaper than what is found in the CBD.

Alternatively, there are budget hotels scattered around the city that will give you a bed and bathroom without any nice amenities or comforts. However, this may be all that you need so check out Waldorf St. Martins Apartment Hotel if you want to save your hard-earned cash for meals, shopping and activities.
