Support your favourite small Kiwi shops and receive up to $50 cashback until the end of the year.

2020 has been a tough year for Kiwi businesses. Now American Express is giving you an opportunity to help with the American Express Shop Small campaign. Shoppers who participate can receive up to $50 back in rewards.

There are more than 160,000 small businesses in New Zealand, contributing more than $150 billion annually to the economy, according to Stats NZ. These businesses are the backbone of the New Zealand economy, and our support is vital during this difficult time.

How does it work?

  1. If you have an American Express credit card, save the Shop Small offer to your card by registering it on the AMEX website.
  2. Then spend $10 or more at a participating small business by 31 December 2020, and receive $5 credit.
  3. You can participate up to 10 times, meaning you can get up to $50 in cashback.

Local businesses of all descriptions are taking part, including restaurants and cafés, florists, clothing and jewellery shops, car rentals, optometrists, gift shops, accommodation, hair and beauty salons – and many more.

Shop Small will help you support businesses from Cape Reinga in the north to Stewart Island in the south. Even businesses on the Chatham Islands are taking advantage of Shop Small!

Check out participating businesses near you at the Shop Small locator map, or compare eligible American Express credit cards.

American Express has also announced a new partnership with BNZ, which will increase the number of businesses that accept American Express card payments in New Zealand. This includes businesses that are taking part in Shop Small.

The history of Shop Small

American Express started Shop Small in 2010, in the middle of the global financial crisis.

Originally called Small Business Saturday, the campaign was introduced in the United States in time for the Thanksgiving holiday – usually a time for shoppers to snap up bargains – to encourage shoppers to support their small local businesses.

In 2011, the campaign ran in all 50 US states, and soon spread to other countries. American Express is bringing Shop Small to New Zealand for the first time in 2020.

Each year Shop Small keeps growing. In 2019, in the United States alone, shoppers spent an estimated $19.6 billion during the Shop Small campaign.

Shop Small has an added drive this year. With many businesses experiencing hard times thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, it’s more important than ever to Shop Small and help your local small business.
