New Zealand alternatives to Netflix
The best sites similar to Netflix New Zealand for streaming TV shows and movies.
Netflix is a pretty big deal these days. As the dominant provider of on-demand entertainment for millions of people around the world, it was a big win for Kiwis when the service finally made it to our screens back in 2015. Unsurprisingly, New Zealand has taken quite a shine to Netflix’s vast library of movies and TV shows, hitting an estimated 400,000 subscribers by March 2018.
This success hasn’t gone uncontested. Eager to capitalise on the streaming boom, rival services like Neon, Sky Go and Amazon Prime have emerged to provide Kiwis with plenty of choices for their streaming fix. Each of these services offers something a little different, distinguishing themselves from Netflix with unique content, extra features or cheaper pricing.
To help you decide whether any of these Netflix alternatives is right for you, we’ve broken down their core features below.
1.SKY SPORT NOW
SKY SPORT NOW offers Kiwi sports fans a way to stream events online.
Plans range from $19.99 for a week, to $49.99 for a month. Alternatively, you can pay $39.99 per month for a 12-month subscription. Enjoy sporting events, such as the UEFA Champions league, NASCAR, international cricket and the European PGA tour. SKY SPORT NOW, formerly Fan Pass, is available on:
- PC AND Mac, Apple TV (fourth generation), PlayStation 4, select Samsung Smart TVs
- iPhone 5 (or newer)
- Android devices 7 and above
Organise your music, movies and TV shows, plus shop for the ones that you want. Streaming radio is also available with iTunes Radio.
iTunes provides a central location to download not just music but movies and TV shows, too. There are thousands of movies and TV shows to choose from, so you can catch up on your favourite episodes at any time.
- Works on Mac, PC, iPad, iPod touch and Apple TV
- Family Share allows six family members to share purchases
- Gift cards are available to send to friends and family
3. SKY GO
SKY GO is available free when you take out a basic Sky package.
- Free when you take out a Sky starter package
- Download the app from the App Store or Google Play
- Choose from shows like Supergirl, Westworld and The Walking Dead, as well as films like John Wick 3 and Rocketman
- Even the kids are taken care of, with films like Chicken Run, The Croods and Ice Age 4
NEON is Sky TV’s entry into subscription, on-demand viewing.
NEON costs $13.95 per month and offers a wide range of prime television content, including Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead and Flight of the Conchords. NEON also provides a good selection of movies for the family to enjoy.
- Watch on your TV, computer, specific Samsung Smart TVs, tablet or smartphone
- Play via Chromecast or AirPlay
- The TV package gives you a free 14-day trial
With an emphasis on original content you won’t find anywhere else, Amazon Prime Video is one of the best-value alternatives to Netflix.
While the library of blockbuster movies and big-name TV shows available through Amazon Prime Video in New Zealand could be better, the selection of original content more than makes up for it. With critical darlings like The Grand Tour and The Man in the High Castle available exclusively through Amazon Prime Video, the cheap US$2.99 a month buy-in is worth it.
- 6 months of access for just US$2.99 a month (then US$5.99)
- If you have never been a customer before, you are given the first 6 months free, then it reverts to US$5.99
- Plenty of exclusive content like The Grand Tour and Mozart in the Jungle
- Offers a seven-day free trial
With a vast library of movies and a great collection of TV shows, including original productions, Disney+ is an excellent family-friendly alternative to Netflix.
The streaming service offers content not only from Disney, but its subsidiaries as well. That includes Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars and National Geographic. Subscribers can also finally stream The Simpsons online.
- Generous library of family-friendly titles featuring TV series, docu-series and movies
- Highlights include The Mandalorian, Frozen II, Onward and Avengers: Endgame
- Subscriptions cost $9.99/month or $99.99/year with no contract
- Great device compatibility, titles available in HD or higher quality and offline viewing
Which Internet TV provider offers the highest streaming quality?
The highest streaming quality currently available is 4K Ultra HD. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video all support 4K streaming, though only for select titles, mostly original content rather than traditional Hollywood fare. To stream in 4K through Netflix, you need to purchase their top-tier subscription options, while Amazon Prime Video offers 4K streaming by default with its standard subscription.
Just bear in mind that streaming in 4K can chew through quite a large chunk of data: on Netflix, an hour of 4K streaming uses up roughly 7GB.
How much do these alternatives cost compared to Netflix?
A basic Netflix subscription sets you back $11.49 a month, but this only gets you the ability to stream to a single device at a time and limits you to streaming in SD.
SKY SPORT NOW may appeal if you are a real sports fan, as it offers matches and events from around the world. Plans cost from $19.99/week to $49.99/month or you can pay $39.99 per month for a 12-month subscription.
NEON only has a single TV & Movies Package for $13.95/month. You can start off with a 14-day free trial to see if you like the content. There is no lock-in contract, so you can cancel your subscription whenever you like. Neon allows you to register up to 5 devices and you can watch content on up to 2 at a time, but if you want to swap out 1 device for another, you can do so every 30 days.
Sky’s cheapest package (which offers 40+ channels) comes in at $25.99 per month. Then you can choose to add further bundles, e.g. Sky Entertainment, which costs a further $25.50/month or Sky Sport at $31.99 a month.
Amazon Prime Video has a clear price advantage on Netflix, charging US$2.99 a month (for the first 6 months, then US$5.99). The only catch is that Amazon Prime Video has a far smaller content library than Netflix.
Which shows and movies do Netflix’s competitors offer?
Content is king in the streaming video space and Netflix has a sizeable lead on the competition regarding the sheer number of TV shows and movies it offers. That said, quality is always more important than quantity and there are plenty of top-notch titles available exclusively on SKY GO, NEON and Amazon Prime Video.
