Nook Audiobooks review

Last updated:

Enjoy no monthly fees on this pay-as-you-listen platform — but get ready to pay higher book prices.

Barnes & Noble introduces Nook Audiobooks: a free service that gives you access to audiobook titles for purchase. But with a temperamental app and hard-to-get customer service, your best bet is the frequent sales to price-match with other providers to get a deal.

What is Nook Audiobooks?

Barnes & Noble is one of the largest suppliers for books and e-books in the world, and audiobooks are no exception. Nook Audiobooks allows you to listen to any title in its catalog on your browser, one of its own branded devices or on one of your own choice — although some reviews describe trouble with device compatibility.

There’s no subscription model here and instead Nook Audiobooks is a straight retail store. Unfortunately, the apps are lacking in features when compared with other options on the market.

While prices are reasonable with plenty of sales, the catalog of options is weaker than others. But its sales can help you price-match to get a better deal on specific titles, or if you have a Nook tablet.

Pros and cons

Like any service, Nook has its upsides and downfalls:

  • No monthly fees
  • Handy if you already have a Nook e-reader
  • Plenty of sales
  • Slim library of titles
  • No in-app store
  • Customer support not easily accessible

How much does Nook Audiobooks cost?

No monthly fees, but prices vary for each title.

Does Nook Audiobooks have a free trial?

No free trial — the service is free, but you pay for individual Nook books.

Expert review

Nook Audiobooks carries a smaller number of audiobook titles from its competitors at higher than average prices. But recurring sales and its zero monthly membership fees might be enough to compensate.

As always, be sure to fully investigate all audiobook subscription options to find the one that suits you best.
