Disney is getting serious about conquering the Internet streaming TV world this November with the launch of its new platform Disney+. The service will be available in the Netherlands from 12 November.
Disney+ will cost €6.99 per month, which is reasonable considering the impressive content library. Disney+ no longer has a free trial, so you’ll need to sign up to watch. Some titles might not be available at launch due to ongoing deals with other Dutch providers, but there’s still plenty to get excited about.
The library will include content from Disney itself, which translates to quite a lot of classic animated movies and shows. It will also feature titles from Pixar, Lucasfilm, National Geographic, 20th Century Fox, Marvel and more. All in all, there will be plenty on which to binge.
Besides the backlog of content, Disney is also investing in original titles exclusive to the streaming platform. Among them, we have High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a show based on the High School Musical film franchise. What a time to be a Wildcat!
The first episode will be available on Disney+ when the service launches in the US on 12 November. The second one will drop on 15 November. After that, episodes will be released weekly. As a result, there will already be two High School Musical: The Musical: The Series episodes on Disney+ when the service becomes available in the Netherlands. The first season of the show will consist of 10 episodes.
Filmed as a mockumentary, the show is set at the real-life East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s the school at which the original High School Musical, starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, was filmed. It follows a group of teenage theatre enthusiasts who participate in a staging of High School Musical: The Musical as their school production. Very meta.
The show offers a fun mix of fresh talent. The two leads are Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo, with the cast also including Andi Mack‘s Sofia Wylie, Kate Reinders, Matt Cornett, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Renee, Frankie Rodriguez and Mark St. Cyr.
If you’re a fan of Glee, there’s a good chance you’ll like High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as well. After all, it features a whole bunch of talented young actors singing and enough romantic intrigue – for laughs or otherwise – to keep the plot interesting. Plus, the mockumentary aspect should be enough to draw in curious fans of the original High School Musical movies.
The show has already been renewed for a second season, so Disney seems confident in its shot to succeed.
The series was created by Tim Federle, known for Ferdinand, which was nominated for Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards. The first episode of the series premiered as a simulcast on Disney Channel, ABC and Freeform ahead of the Disney+ launch to mixed, but mostly positive, reviews. High School Musical: The Musical: The Series currently has a very solid 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Some critics called the series charming, funny and endearing. Others found it grating. However, all of them seem to concur that the kids are talented and the songs catchy. If that’s your thing, then High School Musical: The Musical: The Series should be right up your alley, ridiculous title and all. Disney+ comes with a one-week free trial, so we advise you to give it a stream and see where you stand.
