When Disney launched its own streaming app Disney+ in November 2019, it was very selective in its content. The theme was family-focused, relying on blockbuster content from its Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Pixar labels. Anything considered “adult” was conspicuously absent.
Disney has plenty of great adult content, too. Especially after it acquired 20th Century Fox and its vast library of movies and TV shows. Surely, one day, Disney would drag that content off rival platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, and offer it through the Disney+ app?
And so it has come to pass. In mid-December 2020 Disney revealed an additional channel that will join the five tentpoles listed above; it’s called Star. It will launch in Netherlands on 23 February 2021 and will come with a substantial price rise. The cost will leap from €6.99 a month or €69.90 a year to €8.99 a month or €89.90 a year.
That’s over a 25% increase. So, is the new content worth that price rise?
It’s worth noting that if you’re keen on Disney+ and sign up before 23 February 2021, you’ll save €20 on a yearly subscription. This is because of the price rise that comes into effect after that date. If you’re interested, there is no longer a Disney+ free trial unfortunately. But you can sign up to Disney+ here.
The Star channel will launch on Disney+ with a heck of a lot of content. There will be 258 movies and 54 TV shows. This includes four new Star Originals, content that has been exclusively made for Disney+ and specifically for its Star channel.
