As everyone clamours to get aboard the Apple Pay hype train, you might be wondering what exactly it offers. With Apple Pay, you can store the details of any supported debit/credit card in your Apple account. This way, you can use the Apple Pay app to pay at retail outlets instead of pulling out a physical card. Most Apple devices, including the Apple Watch, iPad and iPhone support this feature. Using Apple Pay is both convenient and safe as it reduces the chances of someone stealing your card information.
To put it simply, you can use Apple Pay as a digital extension of your physical wallet. Apple Pay lets you make purchases with your phone by tapping the point-of-sale (POS) terminal just as you would for your debit card. You can then authenticate your transaction with Face ID or Touch ID.
It uses a technology called a near-field-communication (NFC) chip which helps communicate to the POS payment terminal at the counter, therefore processing the payment just like a debit card. All of this can take place within seconds of tapping your device on the terminal.
You can use Apple Pay both in-store and online.
For in-store use, Apple Pay can only be used with selected merchants in the Netherlands. However, from ALDI’s to McDonald’s, most cafes, shops, grocery chains and petrol kiosks should accept Apple Pay as long as the store has a POS terminal that works with tap-and-go payments.
Apple Pay also allows you to pay securely on online sites and mobile apps. If you’re ordering Kebabs using Thuisbezorgd or hailing a ride on Uber, you can use Apple Pay to complete the transaction instead of providing your card details. That way, you can circumvent the need to store your card information on their site, even if it’s just temporary.
To set up Apple Pay on your device, follow these two simple steps:
To use Apple Pay in retail outlets, simply open your Wallet and hover the phone above the POS terminal. Unlike what tap-and-go suggests, your phone doesn’t actually have to come in contact with the card reader.
You’ll also need to verify the transaction next, which will require Touch ID or Face ID. The payment will then be automatically processed, charging the cost to your default card.
This process happens in the span of a few seconds, allowing you to make your purchase and authenticate it on-the-go.
Before making a payment with your Apple Watch, you’ll first need to add your card details to your Wallet app just as you would for a standard Apple Pay setup. You may do this using the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. Once your card has been added, you can start spending with your Apple Watch. You’ll need to double-click the side button on your watch and hover the watch screen above the POS terminal.
Apple Pay is generally considered safe. To protect your personal information or transaction data, Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and unique transaction code to pair the purchase to your card. Apple does not store your debit card details on its own servers or on your device. To ensure that your payments are secure, authentication using Touch ID, Face ID or a PIN number is mandatory to complete Apple Pay payments.
This process has a number of security advantages over using a physical debit card to make purchases. By using Apple Pay, you can avoid misplacing your debit card or having your card cloned at the counter, for example. Additionally, the authentication system provides an extra layer of security which guarantees that only you can use the debit card to make a payment.
Only devices running iOS or watchOS are eligible for Apple Pay. Google Pay, on the other hand, is the digital wallet solution offered by Google for Android users. If you don’t have a compatible Apple device, consider using Google Pay or another option, such as Samsung Pay. Most digital wallets work identically to Apple Pay.
Apple Pay is a handy tool for iOS users to spend on-the-go. If you’re interested in signing up, remember to check if your device is compatible and that your bank supports Apple Pay beforehand.
