What to watch out for

  • Balance transfer limitations.

    To use the intro APR period on balance transfers, your transfers must post by the deadline. Keep in mind that you can only transfer balances from non-Discover accounts up to your credit limit.

  • Credit line.

    Your credit line is determined by Discover based on multiple factors. But the lowest credit line you can receive is $500.

  • Penalty fees.

    For the first late payment you make, you won’t pay any fees. But starting from the second, you’ll pay up to $39. Returned payments also come with fees up to $39. However, the card has no penalty APR. Other cards have a penalty APR up to 30%, which can last indefinitely.

  • Limited international acceptance.

    Discover is not as widely accepted outside the US as other cards, which could limit your international spending.

How does a balance transfer work with this card?

Your balance transfers must post by the deadline to use the 0% intro APR period for balance transfers for 14 months from your account opening. After that, a 13.49% to 24.49% variable APR will apply.

For each balance transfer you make, you’ll pay a 3% fee. If your transfer amount is $1,000, you’ll pay $30 in fees. Keep in mind that you can only process balance transfers up to your credit limit. If your requested amount exceeds your limit, Discover may process a partial amount. Also know that Discover won’t process any transfer that comes from another Discover account.

Wait for at least 14 days for Discover to process your transfers. In case you change your mind, call 800-347-3085 to cancel your balance transfer within these 14 days.

What to know before you apply

To apply for the NHL Discover it® Card, you must be at least 18 years old and a citizen or legal resident of the US.

To complete the application, you’ll need to submit:

  • Full name and personal contact information.
  • Date of birth and Social Security number.
  • Employment information and income from all sources.
  • Your monthly mortgage or rent payment.

What credit score do I need?

Applying with a credit score of 670 or higher increases the possibility of your application’s approval. With a better credit score, you’ll get a lower APR and a higher credit line.

  • Avoid interest. Don’t forget that the intro APR offer will eventually expire. While you’ll get an interest-free grace period on purchases going forward, they won’t apply to outstanding balances from balance transfers.
