Expert review

National General is known more for its auto insurance than its home insurance, but it does offer a fairly comprehensive homeowners insurance program — especially for high-value homes. Its guaranteed replacement cost option is something that not all companies offer, though it might be difficult to find a local agent.

To see how National General compares to the competition, you can explore other home insurance companies to find the best one for you.

What home insurance coverage does National General offer?

National General offers a fairly standard homeowners insurance policy that can be enhanced with various add-ons.

Included coverage

  • Contents. Insure your valuables, such as boats, trailers or jewelry.
  • Dwelling. Standard coverage on your house that pays up to the policy limits to replace it with similar materials.
  • Liability. Covers legal costs and settlement payments if you get sued as a result of an accident on your property.
  • Medical payments. This pays initial medical costs if a someone who doesn’t live in your home member gets hurt on your property, like from a dog bite or a slip in the driveway.
  • Temporary living expenses. If you can’t live in your home due to a covered loss, National General pays for the full cost for you to live in a temporary location.

  • Extended replacement cost. If rebuilding costs more than your policy limits, this will pay up to an additional 25% of your policy limits.
  • Green upgrades. If you have a total loss and rebuild, this coverage provides up to $50,000 for environmentally friendly building materials.
  • Guaranteed replacement cost. Receive the full cost to rebuild your home in a total loss, even if the final rebuild cost is higher than what you have on your policy.
  • Identity theft. Provides a free consultation service for advice on what to do if your identity is stolen. It also reimburses you for up to $15,000 for extra expenses.
  • Luxury home package. If your net worth is $5 million or more, bundle coverage for your home, auto, valuable items or collections, and umbrella policy.

What home insurance discounts can I get?

National General offers several discounts for going without a claim for five years, your education and where you live. Other discounts include:

  • High coverage limits. As long as you insure your home for 100% of its expected replacement cost, you’ll receive a discount and be eligible for the expanded or guaranteed replacement cost options.
  • New home buyer. You’ll receive a discount for buying a new-to-you home.
Newer home. If your home was recently built, you’ll receive a discount for having a home with new construction.
  • Multipolicy. Get a discount on your home and your auto insurance when you carry both policies with National General.
  • Safe home. If you have a central alarm system, a home sprinkler system or even just smoke alarms, you can receive a discount for protecting your home.
  • Superior construction. If your house was built using enhanced building materials and Erie considers safer than an average house, you can receive this discount.

Pros and cons of National General

  • Numerous discounts. National General has many ways for you to save extra money on your home insurance, from the type of house you own to the level of your education.
  • Guaranteed replacement cost. Not all insurance companies offer this coverage, which prevents you from being underinsured on your home.
  • Special program for high value homes. Expensive homes require more comprehensive insurance, which helps National General stand out for its high-value home program.

  • Limited add-ons. National General offers solid home insurance coverage, but doesn’t have the extensive endorsement options that some of its competitors do.
  • Negative reviews and ratings. In JD Power’s 2019 Home Insurance Study, National General only received 2 out of 5 stars in every rating category. On the Consumer Affairs website, most costumer reviews are very negative, especially with its claim service and inspection process.
  • Spotty financial history. National General used to be a part of GMAC, which needed a government bailout in 2008 and has since split into separate companies. But National General has done well to rebuild its own finances.

How to apply for National General home insurance

National General offers an online quoting platform on its website. But it doesn’t work with many ZIP codes, so your best option is to call the company for a quote and to find a local agent.

  1. Go to National General’s website.
  2. Locate the Get a quote box on the homepage.
  3. Select Home and input your ZIP code.
  4. If you can’t proceed with an online quote, call 800-462-2123 for a phone quote.
