Mutual of Omaha Bank’s Advantage Checking account is best for those looking for an interest-bearing account. You’ll earn 0.05% APY as long as you maintain a balance of $100. Plus, the account has an avoidable $10 monthly fee and access to over 22,000 free ATMs across the country.

What are the benefits of a checking account with Mutual of Omaha Bank?

Mutual of Omaha’s Advantage Checking account comes with a debit card, unlimited checkwriting privileges and free bill pay, as well as these unique perks:

  • Earns interest. Earn 0.05% interest on balances above $100. But you might find higher rates elsewhere.
  • Discounts. Your first box of checks is free and you get $4 off a safety deposit box when you set up auto-pay from your checking account.
  • Low opening deposit. Most interest-bearing accounts have an opening deposit of $500 or more. This one only requires you to have $100 to get started.
  • Avoidable monthly fee. You only need to maintain $100 in your account to avoid the monthly fee.

What should I look out for?

Despite the perks of opening this account, there are a few drawbacks you should watch out for:

    • Can’t open online. You used to be able to open the Mutual of Omaha Bank Advantage Checking account online. But now it can only be opened in-person at a local branch.
    • Overdraft protection conditions. Access to overdraft protection is subject to credit approval.
    • Expensive fees. Expect to pay $3 for out-of-network ATMs, $40 for incoming international wires, 50 cents for person-to-person electronic transfers and $5 for overdraft protection transfers.
    • Poor customer service. Many customers report having difficulties with customer service, which could be frustrating without the option to get help at a branch.

If you prefer a higher yield checking account, you’ll want to keep looking. As always, compare your options when looking for a checking account.
