SoundCloud Go+ music streaming review: Price, features and devices

&

Last updated:

If you're on the hunt for music so underground it's never seen the sun, this is for you.

SoundCloud’s claim to fame is its catalogue of tracks uploaded by users. Some of these are simply bad garage band demos or derivative compilations of open-source samples, but there’s also plenty of well-produced music from artists who either couldn’t get signed or just wanted to release their tunes for free.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Listen to big artists with a Go+ paid subscription

Cons

  • Both free and Go paid subscriptions don’t have access to the full library

What features does SoundCloud Go+ offer?

SoundCloud comes with a variety of features, including:

Related tracks

After listening to a song you like, you can have SoundCloud build you a playlist of tracks its algorithms predict you’ll enjoy. Since these algorithms draw from over a hundred million tracks, many of which come from underground and undiscovered artists, there’s a good chance you’ll stumble upon a few hidden gems you wouldn’t be able to find on any other streaming service.

Stream

You can follow your favorite artists and see their new tracks in your stream as soon as they’re uploaded so you never miss a new song.

Community

Like and comment on songs to share your opinion and connect with other fans. Plus, you can send messages to other SoundCloud users and attach tracks you want to share.

SoundCloud Go vs. SoundCloud Pro

SoundCloud Go and Go+ are paid subscriptions for listeners. SoundCloud Pro and Pro Unlimited are for musicians, and allow you to upload tracks to share with listeners.

What music is available on SoundCloud Go+?

SoundCloud’s music library is at once both the largest and one of the more limited of all streaming services. It all depends on what kind of music you’re after.

If you’re looking to discover up-and-coming artists you’ve never heard of before, SoundCloud’s catalogue of over 120 million independently uploaded songs is more music than you could ever hope to listen to — and it’s growing at a rate of hours of new audio every single minute.

But if it’s songs from the top 100 you’re after, SoundCloud’s library is decidedly less impressive. While a Go+ subscription gets you access to the full catalogue, SoundCloud isn’t very forthcoming about how many premium songs are actually available. Factor in the higher price point of SoundCloud Go+ compared to many of its competitors, and fans of the latest chart-toppers will be better served looking elsewhere.

What devices are compatible with SoundCloud?

Is SoundCloud Go+ worth it?

If you’re using SoundCloud as your primary music streaming platform, then yes.

While the free version of SoundCloud is great for exploring new artists, it doesn’t allow you to play songs from a lot of popular musicians. Instead, you just get a 30-second preview to listen to what you’re missing.

SoundCloud Go+ gets you premium tracks from licensed artists like Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons and Ed Sheeran. But the service isn’t very forthcoming about how many extra tracks are available to SoundCloud Go+ subscribers.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a way to find new artists, SoundCloud is for you. But if you’re looking for a way to listen to your favorite megastars, you may be better off comparing other streaming services.
