M&T Bank EZChoice Checking review

Last updated:

Go basic with no monthly maintenance fee.

EZChoice Checking is M&T Bank’s most popular account option, offering unlimited checkwriting with no monthly maintenance fee. But if you’re looking for an interest-bearing account or live outside the states where M&T operates, this account isn’t for you.

What are the benefits of an EZChoice checking account with M&T Bank?

In addition to unlimited checkwriting and free electronic or paper statements, EZChoice Checking offers the following perks:

  • No monthly fee. You won’t pay a fee to maintain this account.
  • Free savings account. M&T will waive the monthly maintenance fee for your Relationship Savings account if you link it to your EZChoice Checking account.
  • Free customizable ATM card. Your card comes with all the usual features, like chip and contactless technology, but you can also customize your card’s background image and choose whether to include an ID photo.

What should I look out for?

Keep the following in mind before you open an account with M&T:

  • Limited locations. M&T bank only operates in Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
  • Minimum opening balance. You need $25 to open the account, but no minimum balance is required after that.
  • No ATM fee refunds. Although M&T offers rebates on out-of-network ATM fees with its other checking accounts, you’ll have to pay those fees with EZChoice Checking.
  • High overdraft fees. If you go overdraft by more than $5, M&T charges $38.50 for every transaction that goes overdraft, up to five within a single business day.

If you want an account with more ATMs or fee rebates, you’ll want to keep looking. As always, compare your options when considering a checking account.

M&T Bank’s ATM network and fees

M&T’s EZChoice Checking account comes with a customizable debit card you can use at 690 M&T branch ATMs in the states where the bank operates, at four M&T ATMs in Florida and over 1,500 ATMs nationwide. M&T charges $3 for every transaction at out-of-network ATMs in addition to what the ATM owner charges.

You can also use your M&T debit card with the following online and mobile services:

  • Apple Pay

M&T Bank’s EZChoice Checking account is perfect for anyone looking for basic checking. The account has no monthly fees and comes with a customizable debit card.

But M&T Bank is limited to nine states and it doesn’t offer any ATM fee rebates.

If you want an account with more ATMs or fee rebates, you’ll want to keep looking. As always, compare your options when considering a checking account.
