Maven Gig rideshare rental review

While it can help you drive for Uber or Lyft, consider the high fees before signing up.

Man driving for rideshare company

Maven Gig is a rental car service that offers rideshare and delivery drivers access to a wide range of GM vehicles. But online reviews are negative, and you could be on the hook for hefty fees if the vehicle isn’t returned in perfect condition.

What is Maven Gig?

Maven Gig is a car rental company designed for rideshare drivers who want to rent a vehicle to drive with Uber, GrubHub or another rideshare or delivery service. It offers lease periods of 28 days — or 35 days in California — though you can return the car after seven days with no penalty.

You can choose from a GM compact car, sedan, crossover or electric vehicle.

Where is Maven Gig available?

Maven Gig is available in select cities across the US, including:

  • Detroit
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco
  • Los Angeles
  • Baltimore
  • New York City
  • Washington, DC

What are the benefits of Maven Gig’s rental packages for Uber drivers?

From its flexible rental terms to its roadside assistance feature, here are a few perks of renting a car with Maven Gig:

  • Flexible rental terms. Maven Gig offers a rental term of 28 days, but you can return the car after seven days with no penalty.
  • No maintenance costs. Maven Gig handles all of the car maintenance expenses, including oil changes, checking the tires and keeping fluid levels where they should be.
  • New models available. The company offers cars with model years from 2015 to 2019, with half of its fleet consisting of 2018-2019 vehicles.
  • Roadside assistance included. Cars come with 24/7 roadside assistance through OnStar.
  • No work restrictions. You can use a Maven Gig car to drive for any rideshare or delivery platform — even if it’s not an official partner of the company.

What to watch out for

Consider these potential drawbacks before renting a car through Maven Gig:

  • You may have to bring the car in for repairs yourself. Not only is this an inconvenience, but if it’s in the shop for less than 24 hours, you’ll still have to pay the full rental fee — even if you weren’t able to drive during peak hours.
  • Collision and comprehensive insurance not included. While you’re automatically insured up to your state’s minimum requirements for liability coverage, you’ll need to pay for additional coverage for damage to the vehicle. If you don’t add on extra insurance, you’ll be liable for any damage to the car — up to its full replacement cost.
  • You need to return the car ready for the next driver. This means it needs to have a full tank of gas or be at least 50% charged — otherwise, you’ll face extra fees.

What do former customers have to say about Maven Gig?

Nothing good as of July 2019. While it earns an A rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) based on factors like transparency and time in business, it’s not accredited with the bureau. And over 60 customers have filed complaints against the rental car company.

Several customers had issues using the app — and were met with rude customer service representatives when they reached out for help. Others complained about excessive fees and issues getting refunded for incorrect payments. One customer had trouble getting a replacement car after they were involved in a hit and run, and another was charged for an oil change — even though Maven Gig claims to cover all maintenance costs.

How much does it cost to rent a vehicle through Maven Gig?

As of July 2019, prices range from $199 a week for compact sedans to $325 a week for electric vehicles. You’ll also be on the hook for taxes, optional insurance and fees, including:

  • $525 fee if you lose the charging cord for an electric vehicle
  • $500 if you let an unauthorized driver use the car
  • $150 if there’s any evidence that a driver has been smoking in the vehicle
  • $150 for cleaning beyond normal wear and tear
  • $50 late return fee, charged per day you don’t return your vehicle on time
  • $50 fee if you return an electric vehicle less than 50% charged
  • $30 fee plus the cost of a tank of gas if you return a gas-powered vehicle unfilled
  • $30 fee if you return a vehicle with less than 10% of its oil life left
  • $20 administration fee plus the cost of the ticket if the company needs to process a parking ticket or violation

You’ll also be responsible for the cost of tolls and any damage to the car not covered by insurance.

To sign up for Maven Gig, you need to meet the following requirements:

Bottom line

Renting a car through Maven Gig is ideal if you’re interested in driving with Lyft or a different rideshare or delivery company, but don’t have a vehicle of your own. However, it doesn’t have the greatest reviews from former customers. And with all the potential fees, it could get expensive.
