The US has stricter labeling standards for pet food than many other countries, which means purchasing grub for your pooch or kitty that was made in the USA can provide you with peace of mind. However, keep in mind that just because pet food was made here doesn’t mean the ingredients are locally sourced — you’ll need to dig deeper to confirm where your pet’s food actually came from.

What does the made-in-the-USA label mean?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulates all made-in-the-USA claims on pet food. When you see pet food with a made-in-the-USA label, it means that all or virtually all of the product was made in the states, including the packaging, ingredients and production. However, some pet food brands that use the made-in-the-USA label actually source fillers and additives elsewhere.

It can also be tricky to find pet food brands that are transparent about their supply chains. Consider buying from a brand that’s pledged to be honest about the quality and origin of its products, a movement started by the Association for Truth in Pet Food (ATPF).
