Does Lyft provide any insurance?

If your personal auto policy includes collision or comprehensive, Lyft’s contingent collision protection covers the actual cash value of your car or cost of repairs, whichever is less. How much coverage do I need for Lyft XL, Lux, Black or BlackXL?

How much does car insurance for Lyft drivers cost?

A rideshare policy through your insurance company can run from $5 to $20 a month. However, Lyft provides some coverage while you’re waiting for and transporting a rider.

If you opt for additional insurance, you might be able to lower costs by adding only enough coverage to fill in gaps, such as collision or comprehensive coverage while waiting for a rider.

Can I drive for Lyft with a rental car?

Yes. Lyft offers rental cars through its ExpressDrive program. ExpressDrive allows you to rent a car for as little as $44 a week, depending on where you live and how much you drive.

To keep your rental, you must provide at least 20 rides over a seven-day period. Keep in mind that your weekly rate goes down the more rides you provide.

ExpressDrive also includes insurance as part of your rental cost through Hertz, Flexdrive or Avis. Can I drive for Lyft with someone else’s car?

Yes. You can rideshare with Lyft using someone else’s car, such as a friend’s or family member’s vehicle.

Lyft’s official stance on driving a car other than yours is unclear on its website. But it sounds like you can use someone else’s car as long as you’re listed on the car’s insurance policy and the car meets Lyft’s requirements.

How do I make a claim after an accident driving for Lyft?

To notify Lyft of an accident:

  1. Gather accident details, such as the other driver’s insurance information, medical bills and photos of damage.
  2. Go the “Report an accident” section in the Help Center of Lyft’s website. Click Report an accident.
  3. Enter your phone number and click Report an accident again.
  4. A team member from Claims Customer Support will contact you for more information.

Who to report to after an accident depends on the policy type you choose. If you simply allow coverage through Lyft, you provide Lyft with the accident details. In this situation, you may need to also contact your personal insurance to update your driving record.

After you notify Lyft, the claims team investigates the accident as it sees fit. Lyft will likely deactivate you as a driver until the claim is settled and car repairs are complete. For reactivation, you may need proof that the accident was not your fault or that your car has been repaired. This process could take a few days to several weeks.

On the other hand, if you have a rideshare insurance policy, Lyft’s insurance doesn’t kick in until your policy covers its share. Here, Lyft acts as secondary insurance. In this case, Lyft provides coverage that’s not offered by your rideshare policy. It also kicks in if your policy reaches its limit and Lyft’s limit is higher.

Bottom line
