Expert review

The Kemba Elements Checking for Teens might be a good option for your child if they’re between 14 and 17 and you’re a member. You won’t have to worry about a monthly fee or minimum opening deposit, and your teen can use up to six out-of-network ATMs a month for free.

But once your kid turns 18, the account converts into a Hassle-Free Checking account, and if they still have the account by age 24, they’ll have to pay a $6.95 fee. Also, unlike some other checking accounts for kids, this one doesn’t earn interest. For instance, the Alliant Credit Union Free Teen Checking account is free, has no minimum opening deposit and earns 0.25% APY, which is higher than KEMBA’s savings account.
