JUNO is the native cryptocurrency of the Juno blockchain protocol. The Juno blockchain is a sovereign public blockchain that was developed using the Cosmos Software Development Kit (SDK).
By connecting to Cosmo’s Blockchain Communication Protocol (IBC), Juno enjoys a wide range of cross-chain operations in a highly seamless manner (thanks, in large part, to its use of interoperable smart contracts).
According to the project’s website, unlike similar layer-1 blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem, Juno is focused on permissionless smart contract deployment meaning that any decentralized application (dApp) can be built on the blockchain without needing validator approval. Smart contracts and, therefore dApps, built on Juno is also able to communicate with all other blockchains that exist within the Cosmos ecosystem - an ecosystem that is growing year on year. In addition to cross-chain functionality, Juno’s native smart contracts are also compatible with a number of popular programming languages including Rust and Go. Developers of Juno hope that this combined functionality will encourage dApp development on the network. JUNO is the native utility token that supports and secures the Juno blockchain. As Juno is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain, the JUNO coin is required by all stakers that wish to participate in the network and earn rewards. JUNO will also be required for all transactions that take place within the ecosystem. In addition to utility, in the future, it is anticipated that JUNO will serve as the on-chain governance token.
