Streaming sport in Japan

A market that was once overloaded with pop-up-fuelled, unreliable and often illegal streaming options now has a number of official, legitimate choices for viewing sport on your preferred device.

In Japan, depending on the provider, sports streaming can be available on mobiles and tablets, plus certain smart TVs and gaming consoles. It’s always worth checking with providers to ascertain device compatibility for your chosen sport.

Japanese mobile phone carriers and international sports streaming companies like DAZN have access to a variety of professional sports in the country including Nippon Professional Baseball and English Premier League. They offer a wide range of options and prices, with many also coming with free trial periods.

You can also access sports leagues or individual Japanese teams through dedicated apps or channels directly from the source, such as MLB Network.

It’s also not just the live action itself sports fans seek. Features like split screens, highlights, multiple camera angles and dedicated shows are also selling points.

Free trials are common and iOS and Android devices, smart TVs and apps are all options to access content. In an increasingly crowded market, more sports and improved features are becoming available all the time.

What you need to stream sport in Japan

Mobile phone carriers in Japan have been quick to jump onto the sports streaming bandwagon. Providers like NTT Docomo and Rakuten have established their own sports streaming sites and secured access to content.

Apple TV, Chromecast, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Amazon Fire TV, plus Mac and PC, are other ways to access some of the content. Providers typically have monthly and annual subscriptions.

How much data does streaming live sport use in Japan?

Again here it depends on your provider and bandwidth. For example, Chromecast’s video output is 1080p, while 4K is available on Chromecast Ultra. Apple TV also has 1080p and 4K options.

If you have an Internet connection speed of around 30Mbps for download and 2.5Mbps for uploading you should be free to access content to most devices without any buffering or other issues.
