  • No ads. You won’t sit through any commercials on Shudder.
  • Continuous Play. Switch between any devices midstream without losing your place.
  • Viewers can suggest titles. Shudder encourages viewers to submit titles they want to see by filling out and submitting a form.

Cons

  • Limited devices. Some devices are compatible with the Shudder app like Apple TV, Xbox one and desktops. Amazon devices are not.
  • No phone support. Contact customer support through its contact form or by hitting it up on social media, but not over the phone.
  • Online only. Though there’s been talk of Shutter working on offline viewing, currently you need an Internet connection to watch.

Shudder is a streaming video-on-demand platform owned by AMC Networks that offers suspense, thriller and horror content. The service launched in 2015 in the US and soon became available in Canada, the UK and Ireland.

Just like Netflix, subscribers pay a monthly fee and can watch as much as they want from the platform’s ever-growing library of horror titles. Shudder is also producing original content and has been scoring exclusive releases in recent years, so there’s a lot to look forward to (especially if you enjoy being frightened on a regular basis).

How much does Shudder cost?

Get access to 1,000s of hours of horror, thriller and suspense movies, blog posts and a merch store with a monthly subscription for $5.99 or an annual subscription for $56.99.

Even better, a subscription won’t break the bank. Shudder is a niche service, like Discovery+, Funimation and CuriosityStream. As a result, it costs less than general providers like Netflix and HBO Max.

Shudder free trial

New subscribers get a 7-day free trial to spook themselves senseless before committing. It ends on the seventh day at exactly the same time you initially created your account. Cancel it at least 24-hours before that to avoid being charged.

What can I watch with Shudder?

Find every horror subgenre imaginable with Shudder — supernatural, creature feature, documentary, cult. There are well over 10 subgenres. Shudder exclusives and originals, classics, podcasts and a 24/7 live feed of handpicked programs known as Shudder TV are also available to subscribers.

Shudder doesn’t rely on an algorithm to offer recommendations, like many other streaming services. Instead, it neatly sorts its library into enticing collections that will catch your eye, especially with categories like “Flesh Eating Frenzy” and “Not Your Ordinary Bloodsucker”.

Titles range from classics like Halloween 4 to cult hits like It Follows to more recent releases like Terrified, winner of the best horror film award at the Fantastic Fest (the largest genre film festival in the US) and one of the most bonkers horror films to come out in 2018. Subscribers can also stream hidden gems like Hell House LLC, The House on Pine Street or Starry Eyes.

There’s some original content as well, which so far is the platform’s strongest selling point in Australia. Its original movies are particularly enticing, so we’re sure that titles like Revenge, DeadTectives and Belzebuth will catch your eye.

We also recommend you check out Cursed Films, a recent docu-series about the facts, myths and mysteries surrounding iconic films and franchises whose casts and crews have been struck by misfortune and tragedy. Also Creepshow, a horror anthology not recommended for the faint of heart.

What features does Shudder offer?

In addition to offering an entire streaming library of horror and thriller programming, Shudder gives you the ability to switch midstream between devices, leave reviews and use your Chromecast to cast content onto a larger screen.

What devices is Shudder compatible with?

You can sign up for Shudder on any of these devices with the appropriate Shudder app. It’s only compatible with a few devices right now, but working on adding more smart TVs and gaming devices to its arsenal.

Smart TV devices

  • Amazon Fire TV

Mobile devices

  • iOS iPhone and iPad
  • Android phone and tablet

Other devices

  • Desktop
  • Xbox One
  • Roku
  • VRV Premium

To ensure you’re able to use the same account across various devices, subscribe to Shudder using a desktop or the Internet on your cell phone or tablet. If you choose to add the Shudder channel to your Amazon Prime Video account, you’re adding Shudder to your already existing Amazon account and so it’ll be compatible with the same devices as your Amazon account.

What are the different ways to sign up for Shudder?

You can either sign up for Shudder on the main website or add it to your Amazon Prime Video account as a channel. Signing up on its website gives you access on any device that supports the Shudder app.

If you create your account on Amazon Prime Video, Amazon manages the Shudder channel. This means it’s not compatible with the Shudder app.

What Internet speeds does Shudder recommend?

An Internet speed of at least 6Mbps is recommended to avoid video buffering. Shudder claims its video player automatically adjusts to whatever Internet connection you have, which is why image quality is slightly different across devices.
