If you are interested in a wide variety of British shows, including some you won’t find anywhere else, you might want to consider signing up to BritBox. We break down the platform to help you decide if it is for you.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No commercials. Hours of content without the interruption of ads.
  • Exclusive. More British content available than streaming services like Hulu or Netflix.
  • Fast-tracked. Some content is available express from the UK.

Cons

  • Glitchy. Current customers have commented about unreliable streaming features.
  • Online-only. There’s no option to download content and watch offline (unless you get it through Apple TV Channels).

What features does BritBox offer?

Aside from offering exclusive British content that other popular streaming services don’t have, BritBox has few features.

Parental controls

Set restrictions for your kids by setting parental controls with a four-digit PIN from your account.

Curated to what you like

What devices is BritBox compatible with?

You can sign up for BritBox either on the standalone service or as an add-on through Amazon Channels or Apple TV Channels. If you choose the latter, you can watch BritBox on all devices compatible with Prime Video and the Apple TV app, respectively.

If you sign up via the website, you can watch on a variety of devices as well.

Streaming devices

Note: When you sign up through Amazon Channels or Apple TV Channels you can only watch BritBox through Prime Video and Apple TV, not the standalone BritBox app. Depending on what promotions are running, you also may not be able to purchase a yearly subscription, only a month-to-month one. It’s also worth pointing out that if you subscribe through Apple TV you will be able to download shows on your mobile device. The other options don’t support offline viewing.

How much does BritBox cost?

A standard BritBox subscription costs $6.99 monthly and offers 1,000+ hours of British TV in a wide range of genres without commercials. The price stays the same whether you subscribe directly to BritBox or get it via a third-party service like Amazon Channels. If you want to save $14, you can opt for an annual subscription for $69.99.

What can I watch with BritBox?

Scroll through a curated collection of titles in BritBox’s on-demand library, including:

  • Vera
  • Shetland
  • Mum
  • Classic Doctor Who
  • A Confession
  • Coronation Street
  • Midsomer Murders
  • Good Morning Britain
  • Line of Duty
  • Death in Paradise

What Internet speeds does BritBox recommend?

While we couldn’t find any recommended Internet speed to stream BritBox confidently, it has been noted as a rival to Netflix and offers both SD and HD titles. A rule of thumb for Netflix customers is to have an Internet connection of at least 3Mbps. Because of the titles it offers and its comparison to Netflix, BritBox might also need an Internet connection close to 3Mbps.

We found patterns of complaints on Reddit regarding buffering and connectivity issues with the BritBox app. Frustrations that their phone VPN interferes with the video quality of BritBox.

In a response, BritBox told customers that it tends to see issues during certain times of day and on mobile devices. It suggests its best streaming is found on Amazon Prime Video.

How much data does BritBox use?

BritBox doesn’t mention the exact amount of data it uses, but check the data guidelines from your Internet provider and turn off the app when you’re not watching. Going over the standard 1Tb of data, which is the equivalent of spending 16-hours a day watching TV, isn’t possible unless you leave your app running in the background.

Do you like to stream on your phone? We recommend only doing it on Wi-Fi. If that’s your case, it might be worth considering adding BritBox to Apple TV Channels, since it’s the only option that enables you to download content for offline viewing.

How to cancel BritBox

Firstly it’s worth noting you need to cancel your subscription at least 24 hours before your next payment or renewal date. If you signed up directly with your credit card, click on your account on the top right of the homepage, click on “account details” and then “subscription”. In the “Your Plan” section on the left, you will see “Cancel Subscription”. Click that and follow the prompts.

If you signed up another way, such as through Roku or with an Apple ID, you need to cancel your subscription through those platforms.
