Acorn TV is a subscription video-on-demand service that focuses on British programming. Users pay a monthly fee and can watch as much content from Acorn’s library as they want. The platform mainly offers TV series from the United Kingdom, but subscribers can also watch shows from Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
The company started distributing British television in the United States in 1994 – first on VHS, then on DVD and Blu-ray. It eventually launched a streaming platform and quickly became the largest service focused on British and international TV in North America.

The library is organized into categories, so you can easily find something to match your preferences. Categories include mystery, period drama, modern drama and more. Your geographic location affects what shows you can access. You can’t access Acorn content from some countries outside the US.
The service specializes in TV series, but some feature films are available as well. Acorn TV works like any streaming service. You can watch Acorn TV directly through its website or with the app on your mobile device. You can also access it through the app store on your compatible smart TV or via a streaming media player. Once you go to the website or open the app, you need to log in to your account to begin watching.
What features does Acorn TV offer?
Acorn is thin on features, but it offers a few basic perks:
- Foreign language selections: Watch titles in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and more with subtitles and dubbed in English.
- Exclusive content: Acorn boasts exclusive content and has recently started to produce its own series. Unfortunately, the platform doesn’t currently support multiple profiles, offline viewing or parental controls.
How much data does Acorn TV use?
As with every streaming service, watching content with Acorn TV will burn through your data allowance. The platform doesn’t offer any official information on data usage, but streaming usually can burn anywhere from 300MB an hour on the lowest video quality to 3GB an hour for a high-quality HD stream.
How do I cancel my Acorn TV subscription?
If you signed up via the Acorn TV website, you have to cancel through a web browser on your computer, tablet or via the mobile site on your smartphone. Go to the Acorn TV website and click on ‘My Acorn TV’ in the top right-hand corner of the site. Then, click on the ‘Manage Account’ section and select the option to ‘Cancel Membership.’ Finally, confirm the cancelation by clicking ‘Cancel Acorn TV.’
Note that deleting the app does not cancel your subscription — you still have to follow the steps above. If you signed up through a third party (iTunes, Google Play, Roku, Amazon), you need to contact that provider to cancel your Acorn TV subscription.
