Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he desperately tries to save his father who has been kidnapped. In order to pay his ransom, Artemis must infiltrate an ancient, underground civilization--the amazingly advanced world of fairies--and bring the kidnapper the Aculos, the fairies’ most powerful and coveted magical device. To locate the elusive object, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan--so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies. Fans of the popular Artemis Fowl novels penned by Eoin Colfer have been patiently waiting to see an adaptation for a couple of decades. The movie spent years in development hell before Disney eventually acquired the rights in 2013.

Now, the entertainment giant is releasing the movie on streaming, to viewers’ delight. Will this be the next Harry Potter? Only time will tell.

Artemis Fowl was originally scheduled for a theatrical release, but that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the movie was released 12 June 2020 on streaming service Disney+.

What is Artemis Fowl about?

The movie follows Artemis, a 12-year-old criminal mastermind. With help from his loyal protector Butler, he sets out to rescue his father, who has mysteriously disappeared.

In the process, Artemis uncovers the hidden world of fairies. As a result, he comes up with a dangerous plan that puts him at war with the powerful creatures.

Who stars in Artemis Fowl?

Artemis is portrayed by newcomer Ferdia Shaw. The movie stars Colin Farrell as Artemis’s father, Josh Gad as dwarf Mulch Diggins, Lara McDonnell as 80-year-old elven reconnaissance officer Holly and Judi Dench as Holly’s commanding officer. The cast also includes Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie and Hong Chau, to only name a few.
