The Indian Premier League (IPL) is known as the most-attended cricket league in the world, but that will not be the case for the upcoming tournament, which will be the 13th in the event’s history.

This year’s competition, which was originally due to commence back in March, will be held without fans. Other colourful additions that have been a trademark of the glitzy tournament like cheerleaders will also be absent.

The entire event has been moved to the United Arab Emirates due to COVID-19 concerns in India. Players and officials from all eight teams have been in a bio-secure “bubble”, with the action finally getting underway at 3pm IST on Saturday 19 September. First up, defending champions Mumbai Indians take on Chennai Super Kings.

Each team plays 14 group matches before a 4-team finals series takes place. You can catch every ball live in Ireland.

How to watch 2020 Indian Premier League

Once again this season the IPL is exclusive to Sky Sports. If you are an existing Sky TV customer with access to Sky Sports, you are all set. If not, you can sign up for a new broadband deal with Sky that includes Sky Sports to ensure you can watch all the action on the pitch.

What is the format of the IPL?

The eight teams in the tournament – Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore – play each other twice. The top four teams then qualify for the finals series.

Players can be signed via an annual auction or via trading windows. In December last year, Australia’s Pat Cummins broke the auction record when he was signed by the Knight Riders for €1.95 million. Mumbai Indians are the tournament’s most successful side with four IPL victories to date.

In 2019 there was a total of €5.9 million in prize money awarded to the teams, with champions Mumbai walking away with €2.4 million.
