Streaming services are changing the way we consume television, challenging traditional broadcasters like Sky. As a result, the pay-TV giant decided to go on the offensive and launched its own streaming platform. NOW TV not only gives you access to a vast collection of on-demand content but also lets you watch TV channels live. This is a huge selling point for sports enthusiasts, who can tune in to their favourite competitions online, even when they’re out and about.
Unlike services like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video, NOW TV doesn’t come with a set subscription. Instead, users can purchase passes for various types of content. You can choose between Entertainment, which buys you access to NOW TV’s library of TV shows; Sky Cinema, which enables you to watch over 1,000 movies; Kids, which gives you access to all sorts of programming for the little ones; and Sports, which lets you watch live broadcasts of Sky’s sports channels. Entertainment, Sky Cinema and Kids all offer a 14-day free trial, so you can familiarize yourself with the platform and decide if it’s the right fit for you.
As long as you pay attention to the fine print, no. However, there are a few things you should consider before signing up.
1. Passes automatically renew
At the end of the free trial, your card will be charged automatically. If you’re not enjoying the service, you will need to remember to cancel your passes before the trial period is up. We recommend you set a reminder on your phone for the day before your trial expires so you can cancel your pass in a timely manner and avoid extra costs.
On the same note, if you decide to continue using NOW TV, your card will be automatically charged on a regular basis – in the case of Entertainment, Sky Cinema and Kids, every month. If you decide to stop using the service, you will have to cancel your passes from My Account. You will still have access to content until the end of your billing period.
2. Check your data allowance
Streaming video uses a lot of GB. This isn’t a problem if you’re streaming on broadband, but mobile data can quickly add up. Keep an eye on your usage to avoid running out of data or incurring any excess charges. Similarly to Netflix, select titles on NOW TV are available to download on a mobile device to watch offline.
3. No free trial for Sports
If you want to test-drive the Sports pass, tough luck. NOW TV only offers free trials for Entertainment, Sky Cinema and Kids. To watch Sports you will have to purchase a pass outright.
There are four Sports passes available: Day Pass (€10), Week Pass (€15), Month Pass (€39) and Mobile Month Pass (€7). The first three come with 11 Sky Sports channels and work on all devices, while the Mobile Month Pass offers access to 5 Sky Sports channels only on smartphones.
The Day and Week passes can be bought with a one-off payment, while the month passes renew automatically. That means that you will have to remember to cancel your monthly pass before your billing date if you no longer want to use the service.
How do I get my NOW TV free trial?
To get your free trial, simply visit the NOW TV website and select “Get NOW TV”. In the next screen, you will be able to shop for passes. Users can mix and match the TV they want, all with no contract. You can add all free trials available to your basket – Cinema, Entertainment, Kids. Alternatively, you can also purchase a Sports pass on this page or get the Now TV Smart Stick, which enables you to enjoy both on-demand and live TV on the big screen.
Once you’re satisfied with your choices, proceed to checkout. In the next screen, you can review your order and add a voucher code, if applicable. Although if you’re only getting the free trial you won’t have to pay a thing right away. Once that’s done, hit Continue to checkout if you’re a new customer.
Next, fill in your personal information such as name, email, password and so on. This is also where you’re required to enter your payment details. NOW TV only accepts Visa and MasterCard, so you won’t be able to sign up with PayPal, for instance. Once that’s done, you can start browsing the library and watching content immediately.
What’s included in my NOW TV free trial?
It ultimately depends on the free trial you’re planning to get. Here’s a quick overview of each pass.
The NOW TV Entertainment Pass offers over 300 box sets of must-see TV shows on demand. You also get access to pay TV channels: Sky Atlantic, Sky One, Sky Witness, Sky Arts, FOX, Comedy Central, MTV, Gold, Discovery Channel, SyFy, Vice, ABC Studios, Pick, Challenge and Nat Geo Wild. Popular content includes titles like Game of Thrones, The Affair, Atlanta, Big Little Lies, True Detective, The Good Doctor and more. The pass costs €15/month once your free trial is up.
With Sky Cinema you get over 1,000 movies on demand, plus a new premiere every day. You can catch up with blockbusters like A Quiet Place, Avengers: Infinity War, Fifty Shades Freed, Peter Rabbit, Call Me By Your Name, The Shape of Water and more. The pass costs €15/month once your free trial is up.
The NOW TV Kids pass offers hundreds of episodes of quality kids TV on demand, including beloved titles like Inspector Gadget, Regular Show, Horrid Henry and Teen Titans. You also get access to six TV channels – Boomerang, Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and NickToons. The pass costs €7/month once your free trial is up.
Each pass lets you watch on all devices NOW TV works on. You can add up to four devices and watch on two devices at the same time. New users who plan to keep their passes for longer than the free trial should also check out any offers that are advertised on NOW TV’s website. You can usually save some cash if you purchase a pass for two or three months or longer.
How do I cancel my NOW TV free trial?
If you’re not enjoying NOW TV, you can cancel your account anytime, as there are no contracts. Start by going to My Account, then My Passes. Next, Select Cancel next to the pass you would like to cancel and follow the onscreen steps. Once the process is done, you should be getting a confirmation email.
You will still be able to use your pass for the rest of your billing period. For instance, if you’re billed on the 10th of the month and cancel on the 5th, you’ll still have access to the content library for 5 more days. If you change your mind in the future, you can always sign in again and purchase a new pass.
What do I need to use NOW TV?
All you need is an Internet connection and a compatible device. You can watch both via broadband or mobile data, but keep in mind that streaming video quickly burns through your mobile data allowance. For seamless streaming, NOW TV recommends a minimum download speed of 2.5Mbps for broadband and 180Kbps for 3G/4G connections.
As for devices, NOW TV is compatible with computers, smartphones and tablets. Simply download the app to your device and start streaming. If you want to watch on the big screen, NOW TV works with Xbox One, PS4 and LG Smart TVs. Or, you can purchase the NOW TV stick, as the platform isn’t compatible with popular streaming devices like Chromecast or Apple TV. Thankfully, the stick is accessible and easy to use and all you need to do is plug it into your TV’s HDMI port. Plus, it also works with Netflix, 3Player, All 4 and YouTube.
